Does anyone...?

Do any of you take any vitamins or minerals? If so, which ones do you take and what do you take them for? (if you don't mind sharing).

The last few weeks I have been overly tired with not much energy and just generally feeling run down. I typically get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and probably a few hours more on the weekends, so I don't feel like it's a sleep deprivation thing. I don't really want to go to the Dr at this point as I feel healthy otherwise. So I'm hoping to try some vitamins or minerals for the next few months and see if that helps.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Does anyone...?

  • I know this is an obvious question...Do you think you might be pregnant?

I need to take vitamins too...especially since someday I want to TTC!  :)

I know we keep saying this...we NEED to get together!

  • I take B-complex and magnesium on a semi regular basis. I definitely noticed when I got lazy and stopped taking them for a while! The B-complex is great for energy so you could start out with that. I take two in the morning then if I need extra to keep me going thru the afternoon I take more at lunch. You pee out any excess so there's no "OD" worries. (not that there usually is with vitamins) Magnesium is good for stress/muscle tension but it has to be taken spread out otherwise you could get loose movements (not the urge to go but the actual stuff is loose).

Other good every day supplements are probiotics, fish oils or another oil, vitamin C obviously (do like the magnesium and take it spread out). They're all good for immune system function and the oils esp help for joint issues. I worked at a health food store and have read a bunch about alternative medicine so if you would like more info I could send some your way.

  • A year or two ago I was finding myself with very low energy and my Dr. reccommended iron pills and they really helped me. I should take a multivitamin but I always forget hehe
  • I take a women's vitamin each day, as well as 2 500mg cinnamon pills to help curb my appetite but regulate my blood sugar.  I don't usually get sleepy during the day anymore like I used to before taking the vitamin....it just depends on the day.

Unfortunately I ran out and have to buy more and the name is totally escaping me.  But you can get them at Meijer, Kroger, CVS etc.

  • I have taken a women's multivitamin daily for a few years now, which my doctor(s) think is a good thing.  Since we are TTC, I have been taking the Target brand of one-a-day prenatals.

I need to find something to give me more energy too though.

  • My doctor recommended a B complex vitamin to me when I told her I was tired all the time and it seemed to really help.

  • Well, you can get pregnant immediately after you stop BC... just a thought.  Did you get AF a few days after you stopped it like usual? Is it that you haven't had it since then? If so, you totally could be PG. Going off the BC could be contributing to the fatigue also, I know my body was wacky for a few months after I stopped.

To answer your question, I only take pre-natals. I haven't seen much of a difference except that my hair and nails grow quicker.

I was on the Depo shot, so I haven't had a period in a year! I stopped the shot in November and am anxiously waiting for AF to show her face again (who would have ever thought I'd be excited for it??). I had my annual last week and my gyn said it can take 12-18 months for AF to come back. She said if it goes a year to call and she can prescribe something to bring it on.

Thanks everyone for all the info! I currently take a prenatal, but I think I am going to try a B complex vitamin.

  • I was taking the One-A-Day Prenatals, but when the ones I have run out, I'm just going to take a generic (and cheaper) prenatal.

  • I take pre-natals and Vitamin C supplement.  I've also been feeling tired lately.  I'm blaming it on the weather though because seriously it's the end of March and I'm so sick of this snowy, gloomy stuff!

  • I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, and so I have to take iron pills everyday now. I never had issues with fatigue or anything, but for the past couple of years at my physical, my bloodwork came back as being iron deficient...I have to admit, I wasn't always faithful about taking them in the past, but I am trying hard this year, and hopefully there will be an improvement at my next physical!

  • Maybe next time you go to the gynecologist, you could ask to be referred to a nutritionist.  I mean, they get paid to give this kind of information.  I went to a nutritionist once just to give myself a game plan for staying healthy, and we came up with a "diet" where I would get all of my vitamins without an added supplement.  I LOVE it because I have so much more energy and feel so much healthier than I did a few years ago (dropped 30 lbs), and it keeps me from eating crap because I have to eat so much to stay up with all of these vitamins.  However, I now take fish oil and vitamin E because it was too hard (and expensive) to get these naturally on a daily basis.  So, I guess I'd recommend dropping money once to get some advice from a nutritionist.
