we live in a middle unit townhome. we have a fence with both our left and right neighbors, and then of course a back fence. our sliding glass door to the back yard opens to a deck that spans almost the entire width and length of our small back yard. the desk has a low fence all around it so it's like we're fenced in (sort of).
our back fence is falling down and needs to be handled ASAP. it's 6 foot or so, so it adds some privacy. i have noticed some people in our development don't have a back fence. i find the idea of tearing ours down appealing. behind our house is a small greenbelt. it would be nice to look out on the greenbelt, vs. staring at our fence. also it would make our yard feel more open. lastly, it's the cheapest option because it's just demo.
BUT, to replace the fence, vs. repair it (if it's repairable) is expensive if we decide we want one again. and it would give us less privacy (i'm considering adding lattice to the deck fence to keep our cats in if they escape out the door, and also to make the deck fence more "solid"). i think the only thing that's holding me back is will i be tearing something of value down? also, i'm afraid it might appear to be the "ghetto" option. and the second fence might be better from a safety standpoint.
wwyd?
Re: should we remove our back fence? wwyd?
Depends on when you want to sell. I think a fence adds value to any property. I like more privacy too, so I'd definitely want to fence it back.
If you have to tear it out regardless though you could just do it and see how you like it. If you don't like it you can move forward with the new fence.
I agree with Karebear that you could always tear it down and see how you feel and eventually build another if you wanted.
We have a fence for a small part of our yard and the rest is open and I feel more secure having that even though someone can easily open it and come in. We have a ton of kids always leaving crap around so I would want some of my yard fenced for that reason (next year we're going to fence in the majority of our yard).
But it maybe nice to have something nice to look at and you'll still have the fence on both sides of you for some privacy right?
