an update to my panic striken post of about 2 weeks ago...
Sue's Doc said her celiac panel (which would be the definitive test) came back negative, but that it usually does in kids under 5 even if they have it. She does have the gene required to have celiac (but this is used more so to rule out celiac.) Most importantly, aside from being slightly anemic, all her vitamin levels were good. If she had celiac they would expect them all the be bad b/c her small intestine would be irritated and would be eliminating them. So they are basically saying it's not celiac and they dont want to do the scope. {Sigh of relief.} Of course I worry a little about the anemia, but I'll just work on the food selection and she already takes iron supplements- but in reality I have been borderline anemic pretty much my whole life so it doesnt shock me. Only other cause for alarm is that there were 2 tests done for inflamation- and one came back slightly positive while the other is fine. Doc said even a cold could cause this, but we will repeat the test in a month to make sure. So, all that said, it's not celiac- at least we're pretty sure. The problem is she is still having BAD diapers/ diarrhea once sometimes twice a day. Oh yeah, and Im not sure I ever posted this in my original post, but she has a rash on her arm for well over a month now. The derm says she thinks it might be some sort of allergy since it didnt respond to the cream she gave us. (Originally told us most likely eczema.) So now, we go back to the pedi gastro on the 31st for weight update and then explore possible allergies. On the plus side, I think she has been responding well to the beefed up calorie diet. At least if my scale is accurate, she is. For the most part, the main changes are adding powdered milk to her milk, trying to get at least half a can of pediasure in a day, and letting her fill up less on fruit- although I admit that I have let her have a few things I swore I never would, and more than once- think mc donalds french fries, lots of cookies, etc. Whatever works right? So much for my fish and fruit loving kid.
Anyway, even though we dont have answers I'm pretty releived it's not celiac. It is sounding more and more like an allergy. I'm hoping it's something simple like lactose. But at this point, who knows. Right now we are food and diaper journaling everything to review with the doc at the next visit. I will keep you posted!
I just wanted to say Thanks, to the numerous offers for information and all your support. You guys have all been very kind.
