Housewarming Party?

Chris and I want to have a housewarming sometime in May, but is it okay to call it a housewarming?  Does it feel like a gift grab?  Should we just call it a BBQ at our new house?

  • I'd just call it a BBQ. Some people will probably bring a hostess gift or something, but you won't worry about seeming gift-grabby then.

  • You can call it an open house or just a BBQ.  If I get invited to a "housewarming" I bring a gift.  You will probably still get some gifts.  We called ours an open house and still received a few gifts.    I don't think people will think you are asking for gifts, most will probably think you want to show off your new house!

  • Feels like no matter what it's called.. the people who would give a little something will give no matter what you call it, and the people that just want to come party with you at your new spot, will do exactly that no matter what you call it.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I don't think Housewarming parties are gift grabby, but I do always bring a gift if I am invited to one.  The BBQ idea is good too, just phrase it like, "Come join us for a BBQ at our new home!" or something like that.  It gives people the idea that it is sort of a housewarming party without making it an official one where people would feel it necessary to bring a gift.  Whoever said gifts were bad though... get em' girl! lol Gift

  • DH's cousin called her's a "stock the bar" party, which I thought was a great idea. I guess if you don't drink that wouldn't work out, but still an idea.

Not a bad idea to word it that way. But like PP's said, even if you just call it a BBQ, people will probably still show up with a little something.
