Elizabeth Taylor...

Since she passed on now, it was brought up somewhere that she was the last great movie start. Any opinions on this. I love the golden age of Hollywood, do we have any great starts left?

Re: Elizabeth Taylor...

  • My co-workers and I were just talking about this. (They are all 55 years old or older.) The names Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks were brought up, but even those men are getting up there in years. If Leonardo DiCaprio keeps working the way he does, I think he'd be in that company as well. No women came immediately to mind. But we all kind of agreed that the age of the "Hollywood icon" is pretty much over.

    This makes me sad.

What about Matt Damon, too?  I think he's done some good work.

Actresses?  Yeah, that's a tough one.  Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, or Nicole Kidman maybe?

  • What makes someone a Hollywood icon or great movie star as opposed to being an actor/actress who is famous and does a lot of movies?

I don't know, I would say perhaps someone respected amongst other actors, winner of notable awards, and lasted?  I have no idea though if that qualifies Elizabeth Taylor, because like I said I know nothing about her.

I would consider Nicole Kidman or Julia Roberts to be somewhat iconic.  You also have some older stars that are perhaps less well known, Helen Miren, but still highly respected.  Cate Blanchett also comes to mind.

I would think that someone like a Scarlett Johannson or Natalie Portman or Reese Witherspoon could reach that status, but I think they need to prove they have staying power.

For the men: Sean Connery and DeNiro perhaps?  For the "younger" ones I would consider Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio.
