Daffodil question

I think I know the answer, but I want some validation ;)

I just bought some potted daffodils at a charity event today. I'm assuming that, once they stop blooming and the ground warms up enough around here, I can toss the plants in the ground, yes?

Re: Daffodil question

  • I might wait until the leaves die back in fall and just plant the bulbs (easier!) but I wouldn't see a reason why not.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • i'd wait to plant the bulb in the fall

  • I do this every year and have success with them coming up the next year. I do separate the bulbs because they are too close together in the pot for long-term success.  I also plant tham at the standard recommended planting depth for the bulb (i.e., three times the size of the bulb), which is deeper than they are in the pot.  I also plant them with some bone meal and some bulb fertilizer.
  • I've done this with tulips and I let the foliage yellow then plant the bulbs like I normally would.  I had been told it wouldn't work but they've come back two years now.
  • I have nothing to add except my daffodils make me ridiculously happy when I see them. Definitely a great great spring flower, so cheery!
