I think yesterday's article post had a good number of replies so I'm doing it again! This time the article is about Japan: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12747734
What are your thoughts on the article and what are your thoughts about nuclear energy as a whole?
Re: Article of the Day
Great topic, and I love all of the british spellings :P
My opinion is that we cannot afford to get rid of nuclear power, but we also can't afford to build these structures without very diligently assuring their safety. We NEED to spend more money on safety and upkeep, instead of building the structure and then forgetting about it and pulling funding for regular safety checkups. For this reason, I am very disappointed with American nuclear power plants. There is a plant in southern California (i.e. where I live and on major fault lines), and it was revealed last week that they had forgone safety checks for several years due to budget and job cuts, and apparently the cooler that basically saved the Japanese plant and reduced radioactive release there had been shut off in this American plant for 18 months! WTF?!?! NOT acceptable!
So, all of that being said, I do NOT think that nuclear power is a permanent solution and I wish we could phase it out. I mean, it generates waste that remains radioactive and dangerous for 40,000 years!!! I think we need to spend more money and resources on other alternative forms of energy that are safer and more sustainable, e.g. wind, solar, water, etc. - which would mean more jobs and lower unemployments rates!

Love your thoughts Marick, and I have to say I agree!!
I could probably live without nuclear energy. To me, I feel that we are coming up with new ways to harness energy that we just don't need something as volatile as nuclear energy. And I'm frankly appalled about that plant you described in So Cal! I know people have been talking that CA is overdue for a big quake and it's just SCARY to think what the effects will be when (not if!) this happens!
