I got to help deliver my friend's first baby

And it made me realize that I am definitely in the right field. I love nursing, and I absolutely LOVE the labor & delivery unit. It has to be one of the most rewarding things I have ever done regardless of how much work it is. They say if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. I can totally see myself doing this. I owe you guys for the motivation to go back to nursing school last year. Thank you!!!

I feel so cheesy calling it my calling, but yes, that about sums it up. I've rotated through so many other clinical sits and units and have only felt rewarded and excited about L&D. When people ask what I want to do, that is what I tell them but they seem to brush it off. They tell me that "every female nursing student wants to do that". It is true that the majority wanted to do that in the beginning, but here we are in our last semester and there are only three of us left that know this is what we want to do. It's so amazing to be able to meet the parents upon admission and go through the entire process with them. You form a bond like no other with the family and almost a friendship once the baby is born. Think about it; do you really remember any details about your last hospital experience for a surgery or emergency? No, most people don't and if they do, it isn't a pleasent memory. But those who have had children remember pretty much every detail about the day their child was born from the nurses name, to how long labor was, etc etc. It's a story that mother's tell with a smile on their face usually and look back with fond memories. It's a gift to be able to share that experience with the family.

Whoa, okay, see, I always talk waaay too much about it haha. But yes, I feel very strongly that this is what I am meant to do and I pray that there is a position available soon after graduation.

  • You are SOO right about that Autumn. I could tell you every nurse I had in L&D and I would be able to recognize them!
  • You are right Autumn. My mom gets people who come up to her on the street and say they remember her from when she helped deliver their teenager. She is always getting gifts from patience of flowers. It is extremely rewarding!

You are also right about every female nursing student wanting to do that at the beginning but adjusting as they go through. My cousin is in nursing school and while she liked L&D she preferred other areas more.

  • What a great feeling! While not everyday is easy, I do have to say I feel the same way about teaching.

  • That is great!

My mom was a nurse on the trouble pregnancy wing and she still corresponds with some of her special patients.  Their kids are having kids now.
