I forgot this board was here. Book recs please (XP)

H and I are joining a start-up community garden in our neighborhood.  They are planning to have it be an organic garden.

We are pretty novice gardeners, and would like some good organic gardening books to get us started.  Any suggestions?

  • I like SFG book, but it won't be all that helpful to you if you aren't doing raised beds.

I think You Grow Girl gives a good overview of soil issues, attracting beneficial insects, etc.  I think the (out of print, but usually available used on various websites) Rodale's Garden Questions & Answers is *fantastic* for edible gardening.  It goes thru growing requirements, how much to plant/person, seasonal maintenance, and pest/disease ID info.

Both You Grow Girl & Rodale are organic gardening advocates.  Especially Rodale.

    Good luck!

  • Things that help me out a lot are regional gardening books from my local library, mysquarefootgarden has a color-wheel e-mail list with a guide of when you can plant vegetables that is sent out weekly, and blogs of gardeners in my area.  This is my garden's second year, and I'm learning new stuff every day.  Once I got the basics, I've found it more valuable to follow experienced gardeners in my zone than people who garden in fashion that I want.

  • Your Master Gardener Extension program can be a wealth of information.  Mine also hosts workshops and they have a hotline for questions.  Some of the members may even be interested in participating.

Someone mentioned that at our first community garden meeting.  I am hopeful that it happens!
