My husband and I are moving to the Dominican Republic in a few weeks, to a tiny town that does not even have a market, much less a grocery store! I was thinking it would be nice to grow some of the basics(tomatoes, peppers, carrots, some herbs...) to have on hand in between trips to a bigger town for groceries. Does anybody know of a good book to help me start planning? Or does anybody have experience with this sort of gardening? What can I realistically expect my plants to produce?
Re: Growing our own food?
Honestly, this could either be really awesome, or really awful. I garden as a hobby, because my harvests are hit and miss. My grandma, on the other hand, was a farmer for most of her life, so she knows what she's doing. She eats mostly her own food, and only goes out for meat and dairy products. All her produce comes from her own gardens.
I agree that Square Foot Gardening is a good start. It has a lot of basic info in it.
Also, read the instructions that come on your plants and seed packets.
