Would you reapply at a company from which you've been laid off?

If your layoff wasn't performance based?

I know mine wasn't because I was called back later for another (much lower) position after I was let go. This was about 1.5 years ago.

This job would be in a different department of a huge company, but requires some of the same skills as my old position.

There is always the fear of another layoff...and my pride, of course. :)

Re: Would you reapply at a company from which you've been laid off?

  • yes, absolutely...
  • If it was a RIF (reduction in force) or my position was being eliminated for some reason unrelated to ME, yes, I'd reapply.

  • I've only been laid off once (reduction in force)... but HECK NO!

It's been 2 years since the lay off... but things are better. I did not realize how much stress I had and how dysfunctional that place was until I left. The place is a revolving door with management/HR/financial. I was asked to interview 2 months after I was let go, but only cause one person who was laid off same time as me rose a big stunk about hiring when they cut positions. I've seen a few jobs advertised for the company, but the small pay increase is NOT worth it for the stress and hours (nights/weekends/on-call) I would endure.

My DH and I have a much better relationship now. Current job has better hours, more family friendly, and literally no stress. [Now only if I had a job with retirement plan, we'd be talking.]

  • Being laid off is different from being fired. I don't see any problem with it.

Even strong and profitable companies face layoffs from time to time.

  • If I really enjoyed working there and had a strong performance history, yes.  Both companies I've worked for have had "boomerangs" and they've been welcomed back with open arms.

    I wouldn't unless i loved it.

    Ditto.

  • I was laid off last summer and maybe because they picked me and another employee to lay off when we actually did work, showed up on time, didnt call in sick every week, didnt show up to work drunk, etc i was a little bitter and would never go back there. however if you really loved it and there are no hard feelings... Go for it!
