Restaurant help!

Hey ladies!  I was a DSM knottie several years ago until I got married and moved to Boston.  My family is still in the Ames area, and my little brother's birthday is coming up.  I was thinking about getting him a couple of gift cards to some fun places to eat in Des Moines/Ankeny/Ames with his girlfriend - more exciting than standard college food.  : )  But, we don't really get back home often, so I don't know places off of the top of my head anymore and I'm sure there have to be some new places to consider.

Do you  have any suggestions?  They pretty much like everything, and I'm not too worried about price.  Thanks!  : )

Re: Restaurant help!

  • In Ames, I really like The Cafe, Main Street Brewery, and Thai Spice.  With gas prices, if they are college students I can't imagine them making a trip to Des Moines too often.

In Des Moines, I really like Dos Rios, D'Jango, Alba, Flying Mango, and Centro

  • The Cafe is great. The Iowa Stater just opened and is decent as well. lots of people like Hickory Park, but I worked there so I am kinda over that one. A buffalo Wild Wings just opened, I haven't been there (to this location), but I prefer West Cyde Wings for that kind of thing.

  • LOVE The Cafe and Aunt Maude's! Now I want Aunt Maude's mac 'n cheese- sooooooo freaking good!

ETA: In Des Moines, I HIGHLY suggest Cafe Di Scala.

  • What does he like?

I could write a laundry list of recs :)  But first two that come to mind would be Centro and Django.  If you go Django route, make sure and suggest the poutine!!

  • Thanks for the suggestions so far.  His GF lives in Ankeny, so DSM isn't unreasonable as far as driving goes.  And how is it possible that you guys can get poutine in the midwest, but I've never been able to find it?  : )  I thought Portland was supposed to be a foodie city - I'm so jealous!

He's one of the least picky eaters I know, and is always up for trying something new.  I'm sure they've done Hickory Park, though.  The only thing I can think of against places to eat is that GF is lactose intolerant.  So, like eating at Culver's or Cold Stone wouldn't be a brilliant idea.  ; )

Anyway, I'll google the places that have been suggested to check out the menus.  And keep ideas coming if you have them!

I don't think people give Iowa enough credit. We love our good food!

This makes me sad.  Come visit, I will take you out.  My treat.  Everyone should have their poutine :)

  • I love the Cafe in Ames! Their Mac and Cheese is amazing! I also really like The Spice and Fuji which is a Japanese Steakhouse

In Ankeny/Des Moines I really like Centro, Johnny's Italian Steakhouse, Django, Miyabi 9 (for Sushi), Trostel's Dish, and Azalea. As you can tell I love going out to eat.

  • Oh, I will definitely be tracking down poutine next time we head home, and I'm always up for GTGs!  : )

Thanks for the suggestions y'all!  There are a lot of places I haven't heard of that sound and look pretty awesome.
