Teachers

I have a Masters Degree in School Counseling.  I have yet to find a job in that field.  I had a plan to "get serious" about finding a job next Spring, after baby #2 is here.  However, with all of the budget cuts, etc. I'm terrified to think about leaving a job that I really like (but doesn't pay what I think a Masters is worth) to go into a school.  A lot of schools around here are not filling positions of people retiring (one district is cutting 20 positions this way!!!).  I wanted some inside perspective about how bad things really are, especially for counselors.  Thank you!

Re: Teachers

  • Our district isn't cutting counselors but we are cutting our outside social work help.  We used to have multiple social workers/psychologists but we are down to 2 full time (when we used to have 5 or 6 in my building alone, some part time, some full time).  I think it would be hard to find a job just because there's only a few couselors in each school and many times they don't leave the position until they retire.  My school has 2 couselors (and it's pretty big) and they've been here forever.  Same with most of the other schools in my district.
  • My brother is looking for an elementary position and even with all the connections he's made and potential jobs he's been offered, they've all fallen through because of budget issues. My sister-in-law has been teaching reading for about 10 years and is tenured and will be getting a pink slip April 1 because of budget cuts. I hate to sound negative, but I don't think I'd change jobs right now into the education field, esp. since you have something. It's a bit unstable, especially for outside of the classroom positions, if that makes sense. :/ It will bounce back but there have been people here who have gone into a new school job only to lose it a bit later because of further cuts. Tough times.
  • What I was going to write has already been said. I totally agree with PPs and that it stinks!

  • The field stinks right now. I have my Masters in school counseling also and have not found a job in four years since Ive been done. I have stuck to teaching and am now happy I have because I would have a good chance of being laid off if I had switched. There is a counselor in my building who is retiring and they are not replacing her. Sorry to be a downer, but it's the reality.

  • Not good for counselors in my district this year. I believe quite a few are being laid off at the elementary and middle school levels. It is a scary time in education.
