Finally going back to school

Surprise  I keep going MIA on you ladies and I miss you all!  Basically, I landed a consulting job that kept me busy for a handful of weeks.  Since that has ended, I am back online full time again.  lol.

Anyway, I'm tired of not finding a job down here so DH and I discussed my going back for a Master in Accountancy.  It makes the most sense since it's such a useful degree that can land me a job anywhere in this country.  Alas, my poli sci and history majors in undergrad are not serving me well to fulfill the pre-reqs (duh) so I have to take about 4 semesters' worth of undergrad classes before I can even enroll in the MAcct program.  However, I can at least get started and try to find a job in the mean time.  Might as well make progress, right?

So yeah, wish me luck girls.  I am taking one class online for 7 weeks in May and will be done right before LO is due.  After our baby boy arrives, I am going to try and take on a full course load in the fall semester and keep going from there.  Even with doing summer classes, it will take me 2.5 years to finish everything.  Eek!

Anyone have any advice re going back to school?  I graduated undergrad in 2003 and I have so many cobwebs in my brain.  Someone help me!

  • i think you'll have no problem getting back into the swing of things. it's really fun being back in school. a full load with an infant seems like a lot to me though.

i think if it were me i'd probably want to wait until after the baby was born to start a new program to make sure it's still what i want to do. i think (well i've heard) our mindsets change in ways we can't even fully comprehend until the baby is actually here. i wouldn't want to make any long term plans until i knew what life looks like with a baby and until i knew i still wanted the same things out of life. you may have a totally different perspective on your future that doesn't involve this career path, and then the prep courses will end up having been a waste of time. just my 2 cents.

Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Thanks everyone!

MD, I definitely hear where you are coming from.  DH has also suggested not taking on such a full course load in the fall just to help me transition once the baby arrives.  Maybe I will take 3 classes instead of 5 or 6 just to make sure I don't get too overwhelmed by anything.

FWIW, my mindset has already changed since we found out we were expecting.  Because of our LO's upcoming arrival, I do know that I no longer want to work the same hours I used to and am not pining for my old career anymore.  I want a career that will help me have more of a work/life balance than I did previously.  Let's face it, I had zero life and all work before I moved to FL and then had a complete 180 in the last two years.  I feel like my personality is suited best for some sort of work outside of the home.  Even DH notices the difference in my overall happiness when I was working on my consulting project and when I wasn't.

Anyway, only time will tell what will really happen, right?  The best I can do is plan and adjust accordingly.

  • That's great, hun!  I'm glad you finally figured things out and are happy with where this is heading!

In the grand scheme of things, 2.5 years is nothing - it will totally fly by.

I'm not going to tell you that going back to school is easy, it's really not.  Juggling homework, class time, family/friend commitments etc...is tough.  But the best thing is having a supporting husband and family at home to keep you motivated.  I know B will help you wherever he can and keep you motivated.  That, for me, is essential.  Whenever I'm having a s*itty day and just want to go home C will always (nicely) say something like "don't forget, one of your goals is to keep your 100% attendance record."  That really helps.

    I know you'll do great!

  • You ladies are so sweet.  Bella, thanks for the advice since you are absolutely right about having a supporting husband to get through it all.
