Re: Just for Daniele

  • Egads. Even Michelle Obama is touting the BMI. At least the article mentions a percentile for kids that gives a HUGE range as healthy (5-84), as opposed to focusing on the number itself. The BMI is what made my mom think my sister and I were "morbidly obese" in high school-- despite the fact that I weighed 145 pounds and was all muscle and a 3 season varsity athlete.

Still is a lame way to measure a child's health. My BMI was considered to be "overweight" when I was only 18% body fat in college. Just to give an idea of how it does NOT always relate to health. Because it only measures weight compared to height and doesn't take into account a body's muscle mass, bone structure-- and in post-pubescent women, breast size, BMI is not an accurate measure.

Anyway, I'm off my soap box for the night.

  • I know BMI has its limitations, but if you're not a hardcore athlete it's a handy way to figure out quickly if "gee, maybe my weight isn't ideal."  I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of people who think "I'm just a few pounds over my ideal weight" and would be surprised to see their BMI indicates that "a few pounds" is more like 30 or 40 and they really are overweight.

  • I disagree completely, Kimberly. I cannot tell you how many times I've looked at a patient's chart and the BMI says the person is overweight or obese. Then I go into the room, and see an elderly woman who has a few extra pounds on her but nothing that would compromise her health-- and, in fact, just has less muscle mass due to the natural aging process.

We have enough kids and women puking or starving themselves because they *think* they're overweight. How about just looking at someone and seeing if they have muscle tone? If they can run around without getting tired? If they play/are active? That's all I need as a basic guide. Parents should know if they have to keep buying larger size clothes for their kids as well. Those are easy enough "guides."

  • My CF doctor is all about getting on me about my BMI. He's always like "You know...the CF Foundation has found a BMI of 23 (I think) correlates well with overall health!" Of course, this is a different issue because people with CF have a hard time gaining weight.

  • Ugh. I once had a doctor tell me I needed to be 125 pounds to be "healthy" because that would put my BMI at the right number. At the time, I was wrestling in college (as well as taking Tae Kwon Do, playing rugby and softball), had a body fat % of 18, and was still a DD (8 pounds each breast). But the BMI formula stated that I should be 125 pounds because of my height.

The second doctor I went to (because I was worried about having dropped such a high body fat percentage due to wrestling and had started to see changes in my menstruation as a result) told me that with my current muscle mass, build (i.e. bone structure and breast size), and age, I should NOT weight less than 145 pounds! The second I got up to 150, I felt AWESOME-- all my energy came back and so did my regular periods.

That first doctor, had I followed his directions, would have caused me major harm.
