Zantac vs. Prevacid

Can someone remind me of the difference between the two? I *think* Zantac works by neutralizing acid produced by the stomach but does not reduce the amount of acid at all while Prevacid is a PPI and reduces the amount of acid produced but I could be totally wrong! Brody is on Zantac right now and we just aren't seeing much of a difference with his reflux/comfort level. Ella was on Prevacid and it worked really well so wondering if a switch would be beneficial. B chokes a LOT on acid/spit up especially in the night so I am really hoping to find something to help!

Re: Zantac vs. Prevacid

  • Yep zantac neutralizes the acid. Prevacid tries to stop the production of acid. (or is it the other way around? Anyway...) The difficult part is that either way they're still going to choke and spit up because that's only fixed with time. The esophagus has to mature for spitting to stop. The meds just make the spit more comfortable. AR is just hell to go through. I feel for ya.

  • I feel your frustration and pain here....My son Sawyer had HORRIBLE AR and we ran the circuit of meds.  We ended up with Prevacid and were happier with it.  As far as horrible...I refer to the choking part of it all.  I can't believe how frustrated and scared I felt when I would hear him struggle like that.  I totally feel your pain there.  I noticed it gets better with time...but there were times when I had him in my ERGO and he would reflux and get choked up...horrible.  I don't know you but I wanted to send you some good wishes that everything gets figured out for you soon.
  • BTW - we have a nap nanny if you want to try one. Ana hated it because she didn't feel secure. She detests any blanket around here even to this day, so she had a lot of room to move in it. As a result we never used it. All His used it for a while but I have it back now. If you want to try it, you're welcome to. It's great for keeping them upright at night. (although not intended for sleep we did use it in the bassinet before I gave up and slept upright in the recliner with her for 4 mos.)

  • I also have an almost brand new prescription for the prevacid solutab we never used as Hudson outgrew it..I'm sure it's totally wrong of me to offer, but hey it's here :)

  • K had silent reflux (I think that is it, when you don't actually spit up, but have the acid production that goes part of the way up the esophagus).  We only tried Prevacid, but it worked like a charm.

Aww thanks so much! If this keeps up I may have to take you up on it! We do a lot of chest sleeping too in the early morning hours- I just am a nervous wreck that he will choke when sleeping!

Thank you for the offer- I really do appreciate it! We have a pedi appointment Tuesday and I will talk to him about possibly switching meds then so hopefully I will get a prescription of my own :)
