Having a Baby (Aflac related question)
How many nights were you in the hospital?
I have a co-worker who recommended that I get AFLAC for supplemental insurance kinda sorta before I get pregnant to have for when I do get preggers. Since we are thinking of TTC soon and I'm in open enrollment, I thought I'd check it out.
I'm confused by the whole deal.
Aflac is $39.65 a month. I have to have it for 10 months prior to using it. I would be getting hospital coverage which means I'd get $500 a night each night I was in the hospital and $200 for the birth of the baby. I'm really not seeing the benefit here.
Any advice?

How much out of pocket did it cost?

This is essentially what I'm facing. But I don't know what my hospital deduction is.
But you say at minimum, you'd get $1700. How so. I see it at minimum, you'd get $1200 if you had 2 nights and the birth.

I was in for four nights. But I don't have much advice regarding Aflac.
But again, I am sooooooo excited you are going to be TTC soon!

I babysat a puppy for like 20 minutes on Monday and was like, 'damn having a kid is going to be like 100x harder than this.'

I have Aflac, but I have the short term disability. It kicks in after I miss work for a certain amount of days (maybe 5, I don't remember) and it pays me a percentage of my pay (maybe 60%, again, I don't remember). So it will pay for most of my maternity leave. Also, if I were put on bed rest early then it would pay for that time.
What you are looking at seems to be a different type of insurance.

Because I get $500 just for checking into the hospital. I think it was called hospital confinement pay. So essentially I get $1000 for the first day.

I signed up last month with Aflac to cover some additional expenses since my job does not offer paid maternity leave. I don't have the numbers in front of me now, but I signed up for Short Term Disability for supplemental income, Personal Sickness Indemnity to cover copays at doctor's visits, and Hospital Indemnity to cover the hospital stay. PinkWillow is correct. You get $1,000 for the first day and then $500 every day after that you are admitted. You also get $200 I believe just for giving birth and $400 for a C-section with the hospital plan.
Once I ran the numbers it was a no-brainer for us either. The benefits far outweighed the expense.
