Having a Baby (Aflac related question)

How many nights were you in the hospital?

I have a co-worker who recommended that I get AFLAC for supplemental insurance kinda sorta before I get pregnant to have for when I do get preggers.  Since we are thinking of TTC soon and I'm in open enrollment, I thought I'd check it out.

I'm confused by the whole deal.

Aflac is $39.65 a month.  I have to have it for 10 months prior to using it.  I would be getting hospital coverage which means I'd get $500 a night each night I was in the hospital and $200 for the birth of the baby.  I'm really not seeing the benefit here.

Any advice?

Re: Having a Baby (Aflac related question)

  • I have no advice as far as the costs/insurance goes, but I was in the hospital for 4 nights/5 days with a c-section birth.  It's shorter for a vaginal birth without complications.

  • I was in the hospital 3 nights. 1 of those nights I was in labor and the other 2 were for c section recovery. I would check your current insurance before getting this plan. It seems like a bit much compared to what you could potentially owe.

  • That varies greatly among insurance providers so I would ask yours. I haven't gotten a bill from the hospital yet, but I think it will be $300 for Zoe and I. However, I work for the hospital and get huge discounts and a lot of free tests so I'm not the best example.

  • Are you talking about the hospital protection plan? I just bought this and I have no waiting period (though I do have to have it for a year) and it will cost me $390 for the year. It pays me $500 for checking into the hospital and then $500/day while I'm in the hospital. My representative told me the typical for vaginal birth is 2 days and c-section is 3 days. I also get $200 for the birth. So I would get minimum $1700. After my $1000 hospital deduction (from health insurance) and the cost to have the plan for a year we would walk away with at least $300. For us it was a no-brainer. My coverage goes into effect April 1st.

This is essentially what I'm facing.  But I don't know what my hospital deduction is.

But you say at minimum, you'd get $1700.  How so.  I see it at minimum, you'd get $1200 if you had 2 nights and the birth.

  • I was in for four nights.  But I don't have much advice regarding Aflac.

But again, I am sooooooo excited you are going to be TTC soon!

I babysat a puppy for like 20 minutes on Monday and was like, 'damn having a kid is going to be like 100x harder than this.'

  • I had a vaginal birth and I was in the hospital for 5 day/ 4 nights.  How good is your health insurance?  I have known people who use AFLAC becuase they don't have pregnancy coverage under thier normal insurance or they were not at thier jobs long enough to get the full benefits of having paid maternity leave.
  • I don't know much about supplemental insurance, but our out of pocket expenses for all of our prenatal and delivery related costs came to a little under $1k.  I spent just one night in the hospital for a vaginal delivery.  That was my choice.  I could have stayed two nights, but I don't like being in the hospital.  I didn't sleep at all the one night we were even there because if my baby wasn't awake, someone else's baby was screaming the whole time.  If you have an uneventful birth, you'll usually spend 1-2 nights in the hospital.
  • I have Aflac, but I have the short term disability.  It kicks in after I miss work for a certain amount of days (maybe 5, I don't remember) and it pays me a percentage of my pay (maybe 60%, again, I don't remember).  So it will pay for most of my maternity leave.  Also, if I were put on bed rest early then it would pay for that time.

What you are looking at seems to be a different type of insurance.

  • The hospital coverage is good if you have a deductible to be met as well as a max out of pocket. Ultimately it helps you to recoup what you pay out of pocket. While yes it is $40 a month up to that point, when it pays out (and if you have complications) it will help bridge the gap or help recoup the lump sum you paid for the year.

Bahahaha.  Imagine if you had twins, too!

  • I'm not good with insurance stuff, but I was in the hospital for one night with a vaginal birth (delivered before noon, went home at 2:30 p.m. the next day). I could have stayed a second night, but I figured I'd rather be in pain and tired at home than with someone coming in every hour or so to check on me or the baby.
  • I was in the hospital 2 nights for a vaginal birth, the first night I was in labor.

Because I get $500 just for checking into the hospital. I think it was called hospital confinement pay. So essentially I get $1000 for the first day.

  • I signed up last month with Aflac to cover some additional expenses since my job does not offer paid maternity leave.  I don't have the numbers in front of me now, but I signed up for Short Term Disability for supplemental income, Personal Sickness Indemnity to cover copays at doctor's visits, and Hospital Indemnity to cover the hospital stay.  PinkWillow is correct.  You get $1,000 for the first day and then $500 every day after that you are admitted.  You also get $200 I believe just for giving birth and $400 for a C-section with the hospital plan.

Once I ran the numbers it was a no-brainer for us either.  The benefits far outweighed the expense.
