I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I still feel like a kid in a lot of respects, even though I'm an adult on paper. I have a steady job, I own a house, I own a car, someone calls me Wife, someone calls me Mommy.
Even so, I still eat PB&J, I still watch "kid" shows on TV, I hate wearing high heels, I wear my hair in a ponytail a LOT. I still refer to my dad as Daddy.
It's a strange sort of limbo, don't you think? Do any of you feel this way?
Re: How old do you feel?
I feel like I act a lot older than 25. People call me an 'old soul' and say I act like I'm 50 because I never go out and go to bed by 9.
In some respects though I feel like I'm immature, like parts of me are stuck in high school.
Depends on the day. There are definitely days when I feel like I'm 40. For the most part I think I feel my age- I'm the right balance of young but still responsible you should be by your mid twenties.
What makes me feel the oldest is trying to remember things from like, 2 years ago. I look back on everything that has happened since then (grad from law school, took bar exam, passed bar exam, became attorney, got married, moved to DC, furnished house, got first big kid job, we've been talking about TTC and looking into preapproval on mortgages).
But, most days I try to live a pretty fun and care free lifestyle!
Stand up for something you believe in.
This. People at work call me an old lady because I also act much older at work, I don't go out late usually, and I sometimes take a nap after work.
But then again, I love things from being a kid. I will still read my kid books (Goosebumps series anyone?) and watch tv shows like rugrats, rocko's modern life, and yes I bought the DVD set of Clarissa Explains it all.
But I think it's good to have a mix of a young and old soul. It keeps life interesting.
I think I feel pretty much my age (28). I do have kind of an "old soul" like many others have mentioned. But I still feel pretty youthful at the same time. I see nothing wrong with a PB&J, still eat Cheerios in the morning, have PJ pants with moose on them, play Zuma Blitz on Facebook, and love going on the swings when we take the dogs to the park. I don't see anything wrong with that.
No matter how old you are, you have to do things that make you happy. And if that's wearing moose pants and making mac and cheese for dinner, than so be it. I don't think that necessarily makes you immature, those are the things that will help keep us feeling youthful as we get older.
Is it weird that I've never seen that show?
I thought it was the bestest show evar growing up. Now I can't freakin' stand watching it.
Nooner, I think you make a very valid point that you have to do what makes you happy, regardless of whether it's considered age appropriate or not. Life is too short to take it too seriously.
exactly! Now if it's a matter of "acting your age" like being 40 and wearing booty shorts and halter tops, then maybe we have an issue.
But otherwise, I say do what makes you happy!
I do realize you could be joking, but doesn't that negate what you said in your previous comment? Could it not be that dressing like teenagers makes these 40-year-old feel younger, and if it makes them happy, then isn't that a double standard?
fair enough. Maybe I should clarify: I think there are harmless ways to do what you love and keep youthful. If it starts bleeding into your social/professional ramifications or health issues, then it's going too far, IMHO. I also think then it's a matter of not being taught or shown other ways to make yourself feel good and young. As much as I love my moose PJ pants, I don't wear them out of my house, so I know Stacy and Clinton won't come hunt me down. Does that make sense? Again, just my opinion.
I feel very young sometimes to the point where I feel like I'm on the outside looking in regarding my true age and lifestyle. I didn't have the happiest adolescence and I think this has something to do with it. Maybe actingfeeling young now when I couldn't enjoy being carefree in my teens.
I am the oldest on the board (32 in June) but some of you ladies in your early 20's have incredible strength and maturity that I lack at times. I also look very young but naturally that part makes me very happy.
Mentally, until about 3 yrs ago I had always felt younger than my age. Once our friends & family started having kids/buying homes, I felt like we were so "behind" in the maturity/responsibility aspect. We bought a home and have settled in with the married routine and now I feel about my age.
Physically, I feel old. I'm tired all.of.the.time. My body constantly has a pain here or there. My metabolism has SHUT DOWN. I thank God I took care of my skin when I was younger, b/c I still have good skin, BUT I'm starting to notice wrinkles. I look at pics of myself when I was in my 20s and can't believe the change in my face. I was a hotty then. Now, not so much.
I feel very young!
I'm married, own a house, have a great job and a baby on the way. I should feel my age (28), but I feel more like 22. Not so much in maturity but in "likes".
For instance, I like Disney, uncrustables, silly cereal, fruit roll-ups, fun clothes, tall crazy shoes, being silly, laughing, etc.
It does make sense. Thanks for the clarification.
And I agree with you; if it does affect your social/professional lives and/or health/safety, then it could be potentially problematic. However, given your example of a 40-year-old woman dressing like a skanky slut, in my opinion, that ensemble on a 25-year-old doesn't make her look any less skankily slutty and not anymore acceptable, in any circumstance.
But as you said, these are our personal opinions, and well, style is always subjective.
Thank you for making the reference to wearing pj pants out of the house. That one bothers me as much as the hooker clothes.
I finally feel my age. I've always felt older but now it seems that I'm right on track. I had to take care of myself fairly young and that makes you grow up and act older fast.
I do however love Sweet and Sassy, love watching the Disney Channel and still paint my nails with glitter on occasion.... that would make me 12.
I also was just at Gap Kids and saw way more clothes I'd wear from there rather than regular Gap....

sometimes i feel very young. Number one i don't look my age, most people think im in my early twenties. Most of my firends are older than i am. My two BFF's are 28 i am 26.
I love pb and j sandwiches they are the best and cheap too! I eat kid food all the time. When H and I go grocery shopping we get asked all the time how many children we have from all the fruit snacks, juice boxes, granola bars etc that we buy. We get the healthy ones, we just buy alot of them since they are super easy to toss in our lunch boxes and eat on the go. H doesn't get lunch breaks or a break for that matter so he has to eat stuff that is easy and quick.
On the other hand i am the only one out of my close friends who is married and now i will be the only one with a baby. Even though i am one of the youngest, that makes me feel really old. My friends will text me on saturday nights at 9:30 and ask if i wanna go out and im already in my pj's. ( this was before i was pregnant) Im the only one who had a full time job for the longest time. Im the only one who makes dinner and lunches everyday. I have responsiblites to others not just myself and they don't. In fact all but one of my friends still live with there parents and their parents still pay part of their bills. I moved out when i was 22!
I think it just depends on what i am doing and who i am with.
I've always felt older than I am. I've always had a lot of responsibilities tossed on me from a very young age and have always had people depending on me - therefore, I grew up way too fast.
I was the first in my group of friends to get married, one of the first to buy a house, we'll probably be one of the first couples to have a baby.
HOWEVER, somehow, I feel like over the last few months my maturity level has gone way down. BIL and I joke that we switched roles because he's been acting like the adult (he just turned 21) and he's been keeping me in line lately. I'm not going to lie, as ridiculous as I've been acting lately - I've been enjoying every minute of my immaturity.
I feel old. When I left for college, I never went back..I lived on campus during the summers and then moved in with a boyfriend right after college ended. Since then it's been a series of moving, bills, sometimes 2 jobs, meeting Jon, getting married, traveling etc..Then after my dad died, I just started to feel ancient with the worrying about my mom and sister compiled onto wedding planning and moving into my "real life". All our friends are pretty much married with kids or heading that way..I'm the youngest of the group so I think that helps with the feeling older than I really am too.
And as old as feel sometimes, I still feel like I really know nothing about what to expect from here on out...While I finally feel like I'm settled into my life, I still worry about everything.
Depends on the definition of "feel."
Physically, I feel about 3 years past dead. My back aches, I have headaches, I'm out of shape. I'm a hot mess.
Mentally, I'm also an "old soul." I get along MUCH better with the ladies at work who are a lot older than me (like my mom's age). However, I feel because they are my elders I still need address my coworkers as Mr./Mrs./Ms. (even when several have told me it's okay to use their first names)---it's just something that has been instilled in me from a young age.
Family-ness, I still totally feel like a kid. When we have big family gatherings, I still end up at the kiddie table (even when I cooked the damned dinner). It's hard for me to talk to my parents as an adult. I don't know why. I still feel like they look at me through little kid goggles. I think once they become grandparents I may not feel that way anymore.
Andplusalso, I am still stuck in little kid TV mode. I love cartoons/Disney movies, I have a BUNCH of movies/dvds from my childhood now. I love to color in the cheap $1 coloring books. I still hate cleaning my room.

Physically - I feel beyond dead, as someone else said. The fibromyalgia, and all of its friends, beat me up every day.
Mentally - I feel old.
I was the first to buy a house, first to get married. Now we have a dog and two cats, that are needier than any child I've ever met, and have us getting dog sitters just to go out on Saturday nights. Who said get a dog first to see if you want a child? I say get a child first to see if you want a dog. (I love my Tandi so much though and wouldn't trade her for the world, she's worth of it all and so much more.)
My husband has always worked full-time since graduation at a 'real' job unlike a lot of his friends, I worked full-time in college. Now, I'm in graduate school BUT that actually makes me feel younger (well, saying it does) BUT actually doing it makes me feel older since my classmates are all 'adults,' not traditional new college grads. It's complicated - LOL.
BUT, I completely disagree with Nooner - nothing wrong with PJs/sweatpants being worn out of the house. As Amelia said (I think), ponytails are awesome but they don't really make me feel that young since a lot of women/most women wear their hair either in a clip, down, or in a ponytail around here? Maybe it's a regional thing? I've started watching Full House again and I love the Chuggington theme song (thanks to my babysitting jobs) but I watch almost all 'adult' TV.
