For the doggie mommies... kinda long...

Morning...

Anyone out there have a dog w/ Lyme Disease?  Shelby (my Olde English Bulldogge) has it and it's horrible.  We found out a lil less than a year ago and she's gone through a few rounds of the doxycycline - and she's currently on it now (1 1/2 pills 2x a day for 30 days).  Problem being she LOVES to play fetch, chases the frisbee (ball, toy, w/e) at a million miles an hour and doesn't use any kind of restraint when stopping.  It's really taking a toll on her.  I know what you're thinking "duh - stop playing fetch" but if it was only that easy!  She really is obsessed with it and if you don't take her out to play she's all crazy at night and wants to play inside.  Her tail NEVER stops wagging when playing fetch (even if she is snorting and her breathing sounds like a pig instead of a dog!).  At night, when her Lyme is bad, she cries cuz she can't jump on the bed (she has a nice bed on the floor but who wants that when you can snuggle with the humans?) then she cries when she hops down, or down the stairs, etc.  She's my lil baby, and she's almost four years old and it really breaks my heart to look into those soulful brown eyes and see her sad face.

Does anyone have any advice?  Anyone go through this with their dog? She is due to go to the vet in June and we'll prob do the $100 Lyme test to see how bad it is etc.  It sucks cuz it comes and goes, but when it comes she is so sore and really doesn't' eat much.

I'm even thinking about taking a class on doggie massage - has anyone done that or heard of anyone doing it?

So, thoughts?  Ideas?  Advice???

TIA!

  • I guess you better start sleeping on the floor so she doesn't have to jump on the bed anymore. :)

But seriously...maybe some doggy stairs to help with that issue? As for her playing fetch when she shouldn't, I totally understand although I have no advice!!! Bruce can be sick/tired/injured/whatever and he still runs around constantly. Sorry she's going through this :(

  • That's so sad! : ( Poor baby.

I agree with Rach about the dog stairs. I know my dog wouldn't settle for not playing or sleeping on the bed. I haven't had any experience with Lyme Disease, but what about asking the vet for some kind of pain meds? Just until it gets better.

  • Ugh poor Shelby!  I've never had to deal with Lyme's disease either so I have no advice to offer.  Did you catch it and get her on antibiotics right away?  To me it would make sense to keep her active because the more she rests the stiffer she'll get.

Ditto PPs about doggie steps.  Shaun made some for Sadie because our bed is so high.

I hope the antibiotics work and she doesn't have to deal with it anymore!  Stupid ticks!!

  • So sorry for your little Shelby!!!

I also haven't had personal experience with Lyme, but my niece's dog did, and it was extremely hard on the whole family :-( Please know that it does get better eventually, it's just getting to that point that;s so hard. Their dog is now Lyme free, and hasn't had issues since he was treated about 3 years ago...so there is hope that Shelby can get back to a normal life soon!

Ditto the stairs suggestion, or, if she is not too big, just give her a "lift" - that's what I do when my Beagle's hip is acting up and she can't really jump like she likes to :-)

Here's hoping that all is 'normal' in your household very soonSmile

  • thanks for all the thoughts ladies!

and yes - we have seriously considered the steps!  lol - she only weighs 55 pounds, but, it is a pain at night when you are trying to sleep and she's crying (lol - similar situation to a real baby!)

she has her ups and downs with it so hopefully this up will go down real quick... we did give her bufferin with her food, but she is getting REALLY good at not taking her meds.  i swear she hides them under her tongue cuz more and more frequently i find them on the floor like 10 mins later!

    thx again ladies!

  • With our foster dog, Sam, we have to give him two different pills everyday.  I've found that marshmallows work great!  You can sort of roll the pill in with a couple (especially old ones) and they gulp it right down.  If they catch on, just add some peanut butter :)

  • lol i've been making pb dog treat sandwiches - seems to work really well except she basically just gulps it instead of chewing... but hey as long as they go in i don't care how it goes out!  lol

  • I worked at a boarding kennel and had to administer pills to the doggies. We used peanut butter or braunschweiger (sp?) to hide the pills in. The meat seemed to be a favorite, lol. Stores also sell "Pill Pockets" (don't know if you have heard or tried those yet).
