So after you mentioned looking into math or science instead of English, I decided to consider it. I've always been really good with math, and like it, but it's a little dry I think. However, if it's the only teaching job I can get, I'd much rather do that than accounting. Luckily with the FTCE (Florida teaching certification examination) you can take as many tests as you want in the different categories, so I can get certified in both, and just see what's out there when the time comes.
The tests are $200, so it's not like I'll take 20, but still, much cheaper than a masters or taking edu. classes at a college.
Anyway, I'd been taking English practice tests, but finally took a math one. I just scored 100% each on two of the 10 question practice tests! The real one is 50 multiple choice questions, so I'm already feeling great about my chances of passing, much more confident than English
Re: Carrie!
I'm butting in...
You could probably teach business classes also since you have an accounting background.
ok, butting out and going back to grading essays...
Awesome!!
Yeah...anytime I hear about someone wanting to go into teaching, my advice now is to get certified in two areas if possible. It just makes you much more "marketable."

I thought about taking that one, but that's what they're cutting here. Well, I don't know how national it is, but FL is cutting 3.3 Billion from public schools, $97 million in my county. They're talking about dropping ALL sports and any classes except basic English, math, science, history, etc. So I don't know if I want to spend $200 on the test (assuming I'd pass) when it's probably not even going to be useful for the 3 years I'm certified.
The public school system here is in danger, it's so sad. It's making me reconsider taking these tests altogether... but I'm at least working on the practice tests just in case.
School districts everywhere are in trouble. IMO, public education isn't going away anytime soon, but public education as most of us know it might be. Schools need to figure out a way to do more with less, and that will mean that some changes are in order (that hopefully have very little, if anything, to do with high-stakes testing!). Teachers will always be needed in some capacity, and getting certified now can only help you in the future...even if your "classroom" doesn't look like you expected.
I'm not necessarily saying that you should pay the money to get certified to teach Business.
But it's not a bad idea to get the other certs now. (For example, online teaching is growing by leaps and bounds...but you still to be state-certified to teach online.)
