Need compost crock recommendations

We just set up our composter. Currently we are using an old plastic container to store the scraps before we take it outside, but I want to get something that looks nicer and will work.

Do I need a crock with a filter? Can I just use any container I have already? Do you need the crocks to prevent odor and/or bugs? How often do you empty it--only when it's full or more often? If you don't use liners do you have to wash it regularly?

Sorry if these are silly questions.

Re: Need compost crock recommendations

  • I bought a storage tin from Walmart that I believe is meant to store flour, oats, sugar, etc.  I have had it for atleast 1 year and it works great for me.  It is starting to show signs of rusting on the inside but doesn't have rust on it, per se.  It doesn't smell or attract bugs and I empty it every other day or so, whenever it's full.
  • We have a stainless one with a filter, and don't use liners.  We aren't very diligent about taking it out (it's often dark by the time we get home, and trying to turn the compost in the dark doesn't work very well), but it never smells.  We empty it about once a week; sometimes more, sometimes less.

We usually rinse it out when we empty it (we compost our coffee grounds daily, so it is guaranteed to get messy in there), and run it through the dishwasher when it gets really gross.

We've been using it for almost six months now, and we still love it.  We found it for really cheap at TJ Maxx.  It definitely beats the empty butter container we were using!

  • We use a plastic container too. During the summer months we keep it in the fridge/freezer so it doesn't get too gross.

I'm in the market for something else too, but I'm too cheap to get one of the bins with filters.

  • We have this one:

It is "ok".. the lid doesn't seal too well but odors don't seem to be a prob.  It holds 2 gallons which seems good, I wouldn't get anything smaller because it fills up quite quickly, especially with 2 kids (we go through a lot of bread, half eaten snacks, etc).

My aunt has a ceramic countertop one and she said it fills up way too fast, but it is pretty on the counter.  I keep our ecosafe one under the sink.

  • We bought this compost crock for holding scraps, I wanted something pretty.  It has a filter in the top.

    That's really pretty.

We found an small lidded trash can that we never used and are using it. (It came with a larger can we got years ago.) It has a lift-out liner, so that is handy, but it looks ugly on the counter. I might look for something like this eventually.

  • I have this one - http://vitainverde.wordpress.com/2010/04/19/ordered-a-compost-pail/

I love it. never smells, easy to clean, etc. I thought about getting little compostable bags for it, like these - http://www.amazon.com/COMPOST-BIOBAGS-GALLON-25-PACK/dp/B0009PK5V0/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1300989613&sr=1-7

but didn't. I might though to extend the life of the pail/make it easier to clean!!
