I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using a diaphragm or a cervical cap?
I have migraines with visual spots so I am not able to be put on normal bcp (I tried them for a month and had a terrible reaction), I was on the depo shot for about 4 years (Gained a lot of weight and I started having pain every time I was in a sexual situation), I switched to the "mini pill" for about 8 months but my migraines came back with a vengeance and I was having about 8 days between periods. So here I am, the current clinic I am going to took me off the mini pill since my migraines were stimulated and told me my only option was the depo shot....well I took it because they refused to give me a paragard IUD since I have not had any children...but I am having pain again and I am at my wits end...
so I am looking at getting a diaphragm or cervical cap, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice, or experiences to share? Is it uncomfortable during sex or hard to insert or remove?
Thanks for any advice ![]()
Re: Any experience with diaphragm or cervical cap?
I used a diaphragm and I loved it. Once it was in, I couldn't even feel it. It's pretty easy to put in, and a little harder to take out. You put it in any time before sex, with spermicide, and after sex you have to leave it in for 6-8 hours.
I would still be using it, but I'm allergic to spermicide. Now all my husband and I can use are condoms, since I can't take hormonal bc, and they won't do an IUD with me either.
Sincerely hope it works out for you
I used a diaphragm for 20 years with no problems or unplanned pregnancies.
It's not hard to put in or take out, but it is messy to remove. You need to be near a sink. It's hard to be spontaneous, as you have to have it with you and have to have a certain amount of space to put it in, so no "heat of the moments" in the back seat. You have to take it out 6-8 hours after sex, so if you have sex before work, you'll be in work bathroom in the afternoon taking it out.
If you combine it with charting, like I did, you'll have to use it only around ovulation.
thanks for the feedback ladies, well I know that it will take getting used too...and I guess some beforehand planning too, which is kinda a downer but me and my FI are willing to give this a try. I do not plan on getting pregnant, but again I am having trouble finding someone to give me an IUD, I feel like I have had to deal with a lot of jerks for doctors to be quite honest...in fact a normal doc I saw who figured out that my migraines where probably being stimulated more by the mini pill, when I told him that I really wanted to get off the hormones and look at getting the paragard he replied "well I see that you are not married so its not like you need to be on birth control anyway"
I am not sure if it is because I live in the bible belt or if its always like this, but I just feel like doctors look down on me and don't even listen, I tried explaining the pain I was having on the depo shot and I just get told "well unless you only wanna rely on condoms this is your only choice"
I will keep a look out for any reactions to the spermicide, hopefully we won't have any problems with it
Squat over the toilet when you remove the diaphragm. Nothing to clean up that way.
Also, it sounds like the docs in your area are jerks.
