Just not sure where. Do you love where you live? Why/why not?
In the "feeling like an adult" post, I mentioned our newest issue with H's work and that he's (more like we're) actively looking for something new. We had a long talk about how far we would be willing to go for a better job opportunity. At this stage we don't have a house to sell, children to worry about, etc. Obviously, he would have to receive a really good offer for us to consider moving a long distance, but I can't help but think of the "what ifs." What if he doesn't apply for anything outside of our current area and we miss out on a great opportunity? What if we would really like living in another part of the country? What if I get ridiculously home sick for NC?
If you have any ideas for us, DH's degree is in computer engineering and his current position is in systems admin.
Re: Thinking about moving...
I love where I live. I moved to Co from Ca after college and we were in Boulder since 2005 and now we are in the Durango area. I love this area because it's such a far cry from the city. It's rural where we live but I think what makes me love it most is the fact we have land and animals.
I was lucky to find work though since jobs are hard to come by in this area. It was more luck than anything. What is it like where you are now?
We're in central NC, near the RTP area (big tech/pharma/research center). Honestly, it's a great place to live and would be hard to give up, especially considering all of our family is here. The climate is decent, schools are pretty good, COL isn't too high. I'm not a city girl by any means but we don't want to live out in the country either. I'm spoiled right now because there's a large shopping center w/ a SuperTarget less than half a mile from our apartment.
I love the Seattle area! We have Microsoft and lots of hospitals, so there should be a bunch of job opportunities for both of you. I know it's all the way across the country, but it might be worth checking out. It won't be nearly as hot or humid as what you're used to, but we don't have cockroaches (or any of the big, yucky bugs I remember from the three years I spent in NC forever ago). Plus within 10-15 minutes you can go from the city to the country (high rises to actual farm land).
Well, I was born and raised in San Diego, so I don't have much to compare to, but I love it here. Granted, we don't get traditional seasons, but seeing as the worst weather I've dealt with in years is slight hail lasting about 30 minutes, I can't complain.
SD is also a huge medical research area (you mentioned that's kinda where you are in NC -- is that your H's field?), so there'd be job opportunities.
Downsides: it's expensive (you get what you pay for, I guess...) and public transit sucks. You have to drive everywhere.
Upsides: You are no more than 2 hours away in any direction from beach, mountains, desert, or valleys. Seriously, I know people who have been snowboarding in the morning and tanning/having a bonfire in the afternoon or evening. It's a beautiful place to live. Everyone I know who has moved here from elsewhere wants to stay; everyone I know who has left constantly complains about wanting to move back.
I've only lived in PA, but I always wanted to live where you do.
Pros to where I live: Marcellus Shale play (lots of gas lines being tapped) is going to make my property value go way up and bring money into the area again, pretty mountains, lakes, rivers, and countryside, really low cost of living, pretty fall seasons.
Cons to where I live: not a hell of a lot of career opportunities, two season: construction and winter, not much in the way of cultural/entertainment/shopping options

I'm in Upstate NY.
pros: small city, not much traffic, housing prices are very low. Not far from lakes, mountains, gorges. 6 hrs from NYC, Boston, Cleveland. The change of seasons are really nice. We have great public school system up here, lots of really good local colleges and great hospitals. A close drive to Canada. Summers still get hot without being unbearable.
cons: SNOW. We have a good 3 inches ON MARCH 24TH!!! (this is not typical but certainly not unheard of). Job market is tough, but I don't think we were impacted as bad as larger cities. Taxes are high in NY.
Austin!!
Love it! Pros: Beautiful city, great outdoor lifestyle, interesting people, good tech industry, no rough winters (we get a few weeks of cold weather), movie theaters that serve beer
Cons: traffic, allergens aplenty, heat in the summer gets nearly unbearable for a little while.

My 101
I've always lived in the Cleveland area and I really like it. If I could move, it would probably be Colorado.
pros: great parks, theaters, and museums. We have great entertainment and food districts-Michael Symon is from here and has a few restaurants. We have two huge hospital systems, and COL is reasonable.
cons: Snow-we got a foot of snow March 11th, but by St. Patrick's Day we were in the mid 60s. Like mamie two seasons-winter and construction. Our professional sports teams (Browns, Cavs, & Indians) are bad-but we still root for them no matter what.
NC has allergens and summer humidity aplenty as well. I think if he found something in Austin it would be hard to say no. It's very high on my list. Anywhere that gets snow on a regular basis through the winter would be a hard sell for us coming from this climate.
If you really really really love snow there is always MSP. We also have ice storms, hot dish, and really well pronounced vowels. The 3 months we call summer (when the avg. temp is above 60) you can fish on one of our 10,000 lakes surrounded by mosquitos!
Ah hell, who am I kidding? After yesterday's snowfall that is now 6" of slush on the roads I don't even want to live here. If it wouldn't be for our family nearby we would be in TX or CA.
DH still talks about wanting to move back to the San Diego area. He loved it out there.

San Jose, CA is awesome. I love CA.
VMWare is a great company that is hiring.
I'm not of much help otherwise as I live in Europe now.
I could have written this. Just change PA to WV.
