Do jobs exist that you are aware of with such a benefit as this?

I was having a conversation with someone who lives and works in the Caribbean. They mentioned that there are jobs that exist where they live such that a benefits is to have the day off on one's birthday while still getting paid. This sounds to me like a paid holiday (except the holiday being one's birthday).

Has anyone heard of this? Where does this occur?

Nutmeg, cilantro, sage, mint, thyme... these are a few of my favorite things! Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest! We have four children; one left us too soon.

Re: Do jobs exist that you are aware of with such a benefit as this?

  • I have heard of it but never worked somewhere that offered it.  However, I have worked places where employees are given "floating holidays" to use whenever they want.
IUI - BFP! Baby boy born still - August 2012
    IVF - BFP - miscarriage June 2013
    FET - BFN
    FET - BFN
    Switched clinics
IVF with PGD - three embryos created, all healthy - July 2014
FET - transferred two embryos (boy and girl) - Nov 2014 - BFP!
    Baby Boy born July 2015

  • I know at least the banks around here provide this benefit. I assume other places do as well, but I'm not sure.
    Please pass the ice cream.
  • I worked at a place that gave you a birthday holiday. You could take your birthday off or use it any day you'd like - so basically a floating holiday. A lot of people I worked with took the day after Thanksgiving because we weren't automatically given that day off.

  • My last job with a utility had this - 2 floating holidays, one tied to your birthday and the other your work anniversary.
  • I used to work for a hospital where we were given holiday pay for our birthday and two roaming holidays.  But, we were union and it was in our contract.

  • Yes. My current job does this. Its pretty sweet. I work at a non profit. We put in a lot of hours and are salary. I guess its one of their ways of saying thanks and that they appreciate us.

  • My company has this benefit. It's called the "birthday holiday". You get to take it the day of your birthday or during the week of your birthday if you prefer.
  • It would make more sense to get the day AFTER your birthday off! lol

I get 12 floating paid personal days (and 3 mandatory paid holidays) that I can use whenever I want, so I could technically do this.  I think it's kind of silly though - what adult really needs the day off for their birthday?

  • I worked at a place that you could either get a paid day off on your birthday, or a birthday cake if you came in.  If your birthday was on a weekend that year, you automatically got the cake on either Friday or Monday.

I always chose to take the day off -- it was a nice relaxing way to spend a birthday.

  • Yes, when I worked at a major art museum, we got this. You had to take it ON your birthday, though.
  • I work part time at an electric company and the full time employees get their birthday's off as paid holiday... It's the only place that I know of though..

Both DH & I get our birthdays off. It's actually one day of personal leave that is credited on our birthday and we can use any time in teh next year. We both work for government agencies (state for me, regional for him). His agency even sends a card to him at hom for his birthday....
