Has anyone tried the "Couch-to-5k" schedule?
I'm not a runner. I actually cried in high school when they made us run. I do know that I need to buckle down and start working out. I think I could do it, since it's so gradual. I'm not gonna lie, I am overweight. Is this going to be an issue?
Re: Has anyone tried the "Couch-to-5k" schedule?
I completed this program just about a year ago. I want to tell you that it was hard -- I was by no means a runner. I actually thought I hated running. Let me tell you this program was great. I now look forward to my runs.....and feel great when I finish. I never thought I'd ever tell people that I can run 3 miles. I'm overweight as well. I never had any issues with the runs. But really this program is a gradual program. For me the biggest hurdle was in Week 5 when I got to the 20 minute run. For me that was more mental than anything. I ended up easing into it and it took me 2 weeks to get to that 20 minute run. I can now run 30-35 minutes with no issues. I highly recommend this program....its a good program.
One thing I will tell you is you should make a trip to a running store and get fitted for proper running shoes. This is key. I had some issues with shin splints in the beginning and then I got fitted for running shoes. Best thing I ever did. I haven't had any issues since.
You can absolutely do it! I did C25K last year when I was about 230 lbs. It was fantastic for me and helped me get to the next level with my weight loss and exercise, and it made running a part of my life for the first time. I've now run 5ks, 10ks and a 10 mile in October and I'm training for my first half marathon.
I'd echo what other said - some of those middle weeks are SO hard, the 20 minute workout was so scary and difficult for me at the time. Now, I run an hour or more without flinching. But I think back and remember that 20 minute workout was one of the biggest victories I've had running. So take it at your own pace and don't stress about the week to week thing. If you have a bad week, repeat that week before moving on to the next. Master it before you move on - so don't get super attached to the rigid timeline. It took me three weeks of repeats to finally get to 20 minutes!
Good luck!
I will second DMBlack - get good shoes!!! It is a big investment price-wise, but it will be the best thing for you if you are going to run on a regular basis.
My second piece of advice is to push through the pain! Many people will workout, and be sore the next day, and feel that they need to take 3-4 days off to recover. Your body actually adapts better if you make it exercise to "workout the soreness." It is tough, but if you have the mindset to want to do it, you can be successful.
The ladies on here are great motivators so keep checking in here and we will help push you to complete your 5K!
