Changing Name

I got married last year and I am just getting around to changing my name. We got married in CT, I have  my marriage license, what else do I need, and where do I go?

Thanks for the help

Re: Changing Name

  • I had all sorts of problems changing my name because I "waited too long."  I did wait almost five years, and so I ended up having to write letters to SS and stuff.  It was a PIA.  Hopefully someone else can give you good advice on what the proper way to go about this is!
  • First thing you need to do it go to SAA with your marriage license so they can update your name in the system. Once you're done there you can go to the RMV to get your license changed. You don't have to wait until you get your new SSA card to go to the RMV. I think the only other place I had to go to in person was the bank. Everything else I did over the phone (credit cards, etc) but I did need to fax my marriage license to the student loan companies.

  • I did SSA, then a day later did the RMV, then changed it with my employer then the next weekend did the bank and almost everything else I did online or just sent a copy of the marriage license to wherever it was like credit cards and stuff like that.

  • Yep, ditto going to Social Security first.  I went to the RMV the same day I think and it was already in the system.  Everything else comes after that.  Strangely, to change your name on airline frequent flier programs, they all seem to require a copy of your marriage license.  My credit card companies didn't even ask for that (that I remember)!

  • Just go to the SSA office downtown and sign the paperwork. They'll send you a new SS card in the mail.

Once you have that, you'll go to the DMV and get your license changed, change stuff with work and your insurance, then everything else is just a matter of calling, writing, or informing as you go.

  • Thanks for the help. It was pretty easy.

  • Take your marriage license and a photo id to SSA and change your social security card.  After you change your SSC, go to the local drivers license bureau and change your license (Bring marriage license and SSC).   Next visit the bank with your marriage license and old and new ids and change your bank accounts.   Once these three are done, the rest should be just a copy of the marriage license.  Make 40 copies of your marriage license because every bank account, retirement account, IRA, 401K and stock account will need to be notified.   The credit cards will generally just need a phone call and your password.

I started in November and I am still finding more accounts that need to be changed.  It is such a PITA.
