Going from 3 nights to 5 days a week.

I'm a nurse and I've been working three 12 hour night shifts for the past three years. A position opened up for me at a clinic to work 8 hours five days a week doing something similar. My question from anyone that's transitioned like this (or know someone who has), was it totally worth it? I'm afraid that going from 4 days off a week to only 2 days off is going to stress me out. Everyone at my current job, when they talk about working regular hours, always says "Oh, I could NEVER work 5 days a week, ever again! That's just too much work! I LOVE my days off."

Pros:

1) I will never have to work nights, weekends, holidays ever again. Nor will I have to rotate my schedule.

2) This new job will pay me $10,000 more than my current job.

3) I can be on a regular schedule, and actually see my husband. (He works 12 hour days, so when I work my 3 in a row, I never see him).

4) I never do anything productive on my 4 days off anyway. my body gets so tired from trying to switch back from day schedule to night schedule.

Cons:

1) I've gotten so used to being lazy 4 days a week.

I know, changing jobs is the right decision for me and my family. I just need some affirmation from someone who has done it.

Re: Going from 3 nights to 5 days a week.

  • I'm a NOC nurse, but with 8 hr shifts.  It sounds totally worth it.  Yes, you loose a couple days off, but you are getting more money and you will be awake when everyone else is.  Think of the weekend activities that you can plan now that you don't have to worry about transitioning from NOC to days!

And no weekends.  Seriously, you have a few and far between nursing job.  Congrats!

  • I'd do it just for the pay raise and steady schedule. Lots of people work a M-F 9 to 5 job and manage life. Might take you a few weeks to get used to it, but it will be worth it in the end.
  • It sounds like you'd be getting a more "normal" work schedule! I'm not a nurse, but it sure seems like not having to work nights, holidays, or weekends would be worth it - and with a $10k pay increase, that would be awesome!

A regular schedule would probably be easier on your body and life, too - you can plan around it more easily, and you wouldn't need the same "recovery" time to go from working a day shift to night shift.

Hoping everything works out for you, it sounds like a great opportunity!

  • I made the same transition a few years ago.  Yes, I miss my 4 days off.  I miss being able to grocery shop, etc. during the week when the stores are empty and there's no traffic to deal with.

I DON'T miss always feeling like crap and being crabby from not getting enough sleep for one reason or another, people who don't understand why you're not up all day after working all night or expect you to flip-flop your time at a moment's notice, working holidays, missing out on weekend activities, and the disappointment in my family's eyes when I can't do something because of my schedule.

Life is better with a normal, daytime schedule.

  • I work PM shift in the ED. I work mostly 8's with a few 12's thrown in. I would love to get a M-F clinic job. I have a BSN even and can't see to get interviews. I would take this job for sure!
