Last week I had an interview for an HR position, and they have invited me back next week to meet with the CFO. All the HR departments I've worked in have reported to an operations officer, not a financial officer. I'm not quite sure what types of questions I should ask her- any suggestions?
Re: Interviewing with CFO
Does the position report directly to her? If so, ask about her management style. I also always ask direct managers to "tell me about the traits you consistently see in your top performers." Ask about expectations for the position in the first 30/90 days - what projects/programs are first on your list.
If she's not the direct manager, I would stick to questions about company culture, her overall tenure at the firm, what she likes and dislikes about it, and what advice she might give to someone coming into the company.
Good luck!
I'm an auditor and my organization reports to the CFO. I'm not sure if you are worried about the CFO being all about finances, but CFO's have to be extremely well rounded and knowledgable about operations as well.
I would ask the same questions you would have if you were meeting with someone with the title 'COO' and maybe ask an insightful question about the overlap between operations and finance that impacts your position.
Do you think you are interviewing with the CFO because you would be focused on working with accounting/finance folks?
Maybe ask how does the HR function or the position impacts their organization (accounting/finance) - beyond the obvious, would there be additional roles, responsibilies, and expectations related to the finance/accounting postions that you should be aware of? For instance the HR specialists at my company that are 'assigned' to Internal Audit as well as Corporate Accounting go over and beyond with career planning/progression tools and management. The HR specialists are the eyes and ears for the VP Controller as well as the CFO for internal talent management by knowing who is willinging and ready to relocate to a facility, or who is content in their position and has no desire for change.
