Any Pharmacists (Pharm D) here??

I graduated with BS in Animal Science in 2002 and have worked in the Pharmaceutical industry (not in sales) for the past 8 yrs.  Was recenctly laid off due to a merger and subsequent downsizing.  The area in which I live has no other pharma companies within a reasonable commuting distance (I was commuting 1 hour to begin with).  So I've been thinking of going back to school for my Pharm D.  I already applied to the school as a transfer to take 2 classes I will need to get into pharmacy school and am looking into taking the PCATs.  I'm looking for some advice on this venture - is it worth it to do it at this point in my life?  I'm 32 with two boys 2 and 4 yrs old.  My husband is a dairy farmer and I have always been the bread winner - now on unemployment - ugh.

Re: Any Pharmacists (Pharm D) here??

  • Not a PharmD, but I've debated it as well.  I think it's up to you to decide if it's "worth it".  I'm also in Pharma, but I decided it really wasn't worth it for me as it would take me about 4 or so years to do so at the local schools (they're notorious for not being transfer friendly--at least 7 years ago).  I may go back to school--but probably not until my boys are older.  I want to enjoy them while they're young and not be gone all day and night and studying on the weekends.
  • I'll be graduating in May with my Pharm.D. and am currently in the process of job searching. Just as a heads up, job availability isn't as it was 5 years ago. When I chose Pharmacy as my major, jobs were readily available with great sign on bonuses and offers left and right. Between the recession and the opening of new pharmacy schools constantly, the market is saturated...at least around where I live. Google PharmD forums and read some of the posts there on the boards. The posters are really helpful and many are in the same position as you and can give you better insight. HTH!
