Anyone do the South Beach Diet AND workout?

Not that I think anyone has any feedback, but on the off chance I will post my question......

I am on phase 1 of the South Beach Diet and I am working out.  But OMG, I am drained, like I can hardly get off the couch.  And I barely have the energy to get through my workouts, even when they are not overly strenuous.

I couldn't really find any info on the internet, but should I move on to phase 2 if I am going to work out?   Does my body need more carbs?

Re: Anyone do the South Beach Diet AND workout?

  • I don't have much input; I did read about someone who was vegan AND sbd and she barely had the energy to get off the couch to feed herself.  I hope you get an answer soon - I know I hate hate hate feeling drained.  And you have a baby, too!

  • I did SBD and working out. You can't be too strenuous during phase 1. They suggest chair work outs basic sit ups and mild walking. Once you go to phase 2 you can do more strenuous exercising.
  • I did!  It was awful.  I did this in January.  On like day 4 I almost passed out in the shower and my husband was like, that's it, no more SB diet.  I know I probably sound like a wimp but man, I felt like crap.

So I switched to Weight Watchers (just using their recipes and learning about points, not actually paying for it...) and I felt a lot better and I lost 6 lbs in the past month.  This might not sound like a lot but I'm only trying to lose about 10 total and I stay at the same weight for long periods of time so this was a lot for me.

  • I was surprised that you said you were working out and doing SB! At least during phase one. How long have you been doing it? Part of the diet is eliminating all the carbs/sugars and putting yourself into ketosis so you can burn fat first. I would think after just a week you would be OK to start phase 2, but you might not lose as much weight in phase one as if you did it for two weeks. But working out is important, too. And you are trying to lose less than 10 lbs, right? I think I remember you saying before that you wanted to lose just a few more. So it's not like you would drop it all in two weeks, anyway. I already hate WW! It is so hard to stay in my points. I am sure I will grow to love it though when I start losing weight!

I have been working out for about three weeks now and I just started SBD this past Sunday.  So I have been on the diet for 6 days.  OMG, I am drained!  I am thinking I am going to move on to phase 2, because I would hate to interrupt my motivation to work out.

I think yesterday I put myself into ketosis.  I was reading up on it and one big indicator is bad breath.  When I was working out I kept getting the urge to stop and go brush my teeth because I could TASTE how bad my breath was.  Regardless of the fact I had brushed my teeth an hour prior.

GL to you in your weight loss!  Whenever I have done WW in the past I do great the first week and then I sort of fizzle out.  Losing weight sucks.  I sure miss the days of my early 20's when at most I had to diet for a week to get back to my ideal weight.  Ha.  Those days are long gone!

Shawna!!  Glad to see you pop in!  Hope all is well with you!

Thanks for chiming in and making me feel like I am not a weakling!  Yesterday I was so disappointed in myself during my work out.  I was flat out drained and I really couldn't understand why.  Once I dug a little deeper on the internet I discovered that my "weight loss plan" was not so healthy!

I like the idea of cutting carbs with the SBD, I just think I am going to modify it if I am going to be working out.  GL with WW and 6 lbs is impressive!

Thanks for the info!  I think I am going to cut phase 1 short and move onto phase 2.

Oh and BTW, I am super excited to find out if you are having a boy or a girl!

Blossom, do they give you extra points for nursing twins?  I can't WAIT to get back on the program.  My type A-ness needs an outlet.  You'll get there, loving WW - the first week is ALWAYS hard for FI, since he doesn't get to drink soda all willy-nilly (since he doesn't like diet), but the weight loss can get addictive, in the good way.  Good Luck!

And good luck, to you, too, Kathy.  I know you guys will both get there and do great!

The medi diet I did is a similar idea of SBD, but uses appetite supressants to cheat.  The first stage is to put your body into ketosis.  It is to last between 2-5 days.  They give you strips to pee on at day 2.  If the strip turns dark pink it means you are there and you enter stage 2 where you add carbs (fruits and veggies).  If by day 5 you don't ever get the pink color, you automatically go to stage 2 anyway.  I got to stage 2 on the 3rd morning.  Those first 2 days were the worst, I had a horrible headache from losing all the sugar in my body (and I was adjusting to the meds).  Once I started adding the carbs the headache went away.  The Dr recommends ZERO exercise the first week.  I think it is just because they are monitoring you and they want to see how your body adjusts to the diet.  I didn't work out at all the first 7 days, (except my job is on my feet, but it's so routine I don't think that counts).  I know if I can't get a work out in I start feeling like crap.  I'm finally off the diet, and at my goal weight.  Now I am doing lifelong maintenance.  The maintenance diet is The Zone Diet.   When I was doing the medi diet though, the Dr recommended moderate exercise 30 minutes 4 days a week.  I blew that out of the water.  I did about 4-5 hours per week of mountain biking, cardio and pump classes, spin classes, and power yoga.  I just added a couple ounces of protein before and after the exercise.  I could never have done it without the carbs though.  Best of luck to you Kathy, I know how difficult it is to get there.  You will!

Thanks for the info.  I had a feeling that working out and still being on phase 1 wasn't the healthiest idea!

And good for you for meeting your weight loss goals!  That's great that you have found a passion for biking!
