s/o ugly babies... ugly baby names?

I know we've all heard a name, or seen a spelling and wondered WHY a parent would do that to their child.. but it still happens all the time.

So.. what are some names you hate?  Either because of the name, or spelling?  Or maybe a personal experience with the name has now ruined it for your future children.

Re: s/o ugly babies... ugly baby names?

  • At my work I come across all kinds of horrible names. My all time favorite bad name is Krystal Meth, really, why would you do that to your child. I am so sick of the -aden names, Caden, Braden, Aiden, etc. I also don't understand the really long names that no one in their right mind can pronounce. Oh here is another bad one, SirAnthony, WHY WHY WHY?!?!

I hate when people spell names "differntly" to be cool. Just spell it Ashely, not Ashlee, Ashlie, Ashli or anything like that. The name is still the same. Don't pretend like it's not.

I will let my mom know that you don't think she is very cool considering she spelled my name Ashlee.

  • haha well that did not go very well.  Don't worry Ashlee, I get it ALL THE TIME because my momma actually spelled the name "Kirsten" the way it sounds to make it easy and people still b!tch about it.

  • At one of my previous jobs as a dispatcher, I had a driver that was named Kunta Kinte Ugonda Bush. Seriously. He went by "Kunta". I guess his parents really liked the movie Roots.

Oh, and he had a baby boy and named him a very ethnic name as well. But I can't remember his son's name.

    That is terrible.

On the Ashlee thing, I think that Ashley and Ashlee, nothing wrong with those being interchangeable but when you start using an 'i' or 'leigh' that is just silly.

  • I am not a huge fan of a lot of the old names that are coming back (though I do love some, like Audrey and Cora).  But that's just me.  I'm obviously in the minority.

I will say that I don't understand why you would spell Megan any other way (like with additional e's and a's and an h), but that's really only because my name has been misspelled my entire life and in my opinion, my parents chose the easiest, shortest, most simplified spelling.  It's almost as bad as when people (especially here in Texas!) pronounce it May-gen.

    End rant :)

  • No offense to anywhere here disclaimer**

I'm not a fan of "flower" names: Daisy, Rose, Gems: Ruby, items: Angel

I'm not a fan of spellings with "y" instead of "i", like Alyson

I don't like Thaddeus, Miles, Veronica, girls named boy names (Kyle specifically comes to mind).

Same here with the naming your kids after things.  There is an acceptable way to do that (flowers, like Rose or Violet, gems, like Ruby), and there's a way not to do that.  Yeah, pretty much all of the above examples.

As for Miles, well, I've known two in my life, and both weren't manwhores...mainly because they were complete prats and no one would sleep with either one of them.  When I hear Miles, I think "prissy fop with his nose in the air".  Yuk!

Oh my god, THIS! LOL I have never understood the spelling Meghan! And in GA I get "May-gen" all the time. I always want to tell people, it is pronounced exactly as it is spelled!

My parents got my name from the TV show The Thornbirds, which was apparently pretty popular in the early 80's because I know SO many Megans that are my age!

I know a Me-gan, spelled Meaghan.  And I am always completely confuzzled when I see her name.  I still say it "Meg-an" in my head, even though I know it's wrong.

I also hate the "ai(y)den" names that are so trendy now.   And I really dislike it when people use their kid's middle name as his/her name.  For example, my cousin named his daughter "Morgan Blake," (which just sounds like a Dynasty character) but fully intended to call her Blake all along.  So name her Blake Morgan, then! It's different when someone chooses to go by their middle name, but I do not understand giving your kid a name you have no intention of using.

I have another friend who has spent her entire life telling people how to pronounce her Gaelic name.  Almost no one gets it right on the first or even third try.  So when she had a daughter, what did she do? She gave her a name that had a normal spelling, but used the Gaelic spelling. So now she's saddled her kid with the same fate. I don't get it.

Ha!  I figured you would sympathize!

You must be a few years younger than me...I only knew one other Megan that was my age, but I know it became increasingly popular in the years after (like mid 80's).

I just looked it up - it was most popular (#10) in 1985.

  • OMG, Who the hell would name their kid Aquanette??!?!??! REALLY??

And I'm sorry, I think my name is by far the most annoying name to burden your child with... No one can ever pronounce it right, even when I shorten it to Ana (how do you eff that up?) and no one can EVER spell it right either. I love getting letters for Anesthesia...

Oh, and Ana-Banana... I am the effing name game... gah.

I like Kyle for a girl (sorry)! I don't really hate too many names, except the You-Neek ones, come on now, why punish your child that way? And Aquanette, seriously, I can't even believe someone did that. 20 bucks says that kid gets find for polluting at some point.

...so forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but all the Me(a)g(h)ans I know, including my cousin, pronounce it May-gen.  Is it Mee-gen, then?  Maybe it's a regional thing, since I'm from Missouri.

  • My SIL plans to name any daughters she might have (notice, this does not include Jacey) Phoebe.  But guess what?  She's going to get funky with the spelling and go with Feebee.

Please tell me you are joking? Why?? That looked like Frisbee when I first saw it.

My BF's name is Megan, we pronounce it Meg-en, just like it sounds, which I guess could be May-gen also.

That is NOT COOL.  That girl is going to get called FReebee her entire life.  As in, skank.

My sister lived next to a woman who named her daughter Areola.

If she named her Emma Lee I think it would be fine.  But Emmalee?  A lifetime of correcting people.   I like unique, but yeah.. you-neek... not so much.  There's being different and being difficult.

Oh Ana, you cannot complain lol, try having to deal with my name.  Xandrea, the X is pronounced like a Z.  I don't understand why people have such a hard with it.  I get everything from X-andrea, Igzandrea, Sandra, Alexandra, and most commonly Andrea.  I'm assuming people just think the X is a big joke and my name is really Andrea.  Oh how I hate it.

It's Meg-an.  Like if you were to shorten it to Meg (rhymes with egg), then add -an on the end.

In the south, accents tend to turn it to Mayg instead of Meg.  But it's funny because those same people that call me May-gen will sometimes call me Meg and pronounce it right.

It's just a pet peeve - my parents (and entire family) are from NY so I've always said and been called Megan, not May-gan.

    This.

I also dislike  when the first and last name are the same letter.  I have two different friends who named all of their kids with "B" names, and their last name also starts with a "B."  Coincidentally, they both have a Bennett and a Bishop.  So it's like Bennett Barnheart and Bishop Barnheart (not their real last name).  Yuck!  One of them has a kid named Bodee too.  And that's a name that I hate regardless of what last name it is with.

Aww, it's okay if your kids have names that I dislike.  I love you anyway. Also, I think that it is different with your first name because you are "Br" instead of "B-vowel."  It makes s different sound, so isn't as bad.

  • Bad: (I swear on my life these are real peoples names) Princessa, Saw, Bich, Aquanetta (more popular than i thought), Queenie, Pizazz,  I agree the -aden/aiden names are getting old fast. Certain variation spellings of common names drive me nuts.

My name is Crystal... spelled how is should be yet everyone insists on Krystal, Chrystal, Christal, Khrystal... etc.

I could go on forever! :)
