I hate menu planning for parties. I'm too damn particular about things. I blame my mom for having me hang around the hotels/banquets etc. It's been weeks and I'm still finalizing the menu for Caroline's small birthday party. Such a fool. Must remind myself, take it easy so I can enjoy every moment. It's about the baby now, not the food and decor! lol I'm posting this so I can hold myself accountable in a few days when I'm starting to go type A again
Re: Why do I do this?
I don't even remember what I served for Helen's first birthday party. It was either pulled pork sandwiches or BBQ chicken skewers and hamburgers...I had one for her baptism and one for her birthday and I don't know which was which! I can nearly 100% guarantee that none of the party guests can remember now, either. Moral of the story: don't stress!
I did a lot of apps for her christening (see blog
) and I figure I'll do the same.
Tentative menu:
Drip (pulled) beef sliders
pasta salad
stuffed mini peppers
stuffed mushrooms
Lil' Duck pizzas (if trial doesn't work out, a twist on cocktail meatballs will be served)
chips, veggies and dip
*possible bruschetta with tomato topping
3D Duck Cake
"water" cupcakes
homemade strawberry ice cream cut into ducks
Decor, I'm going basic with some balloons, and that crepe tissue stuff. I normally go over the top, but I do know that she's 1 and wont remember it. People will remember the food though hehe. I'm such a lover of all things appetizer so it's hard for me to pick from things I love, want to try, and things I know people will eat.
Thanks Jess! Yeah, DH doesn't see how important this survival year is for me. Obviously, he knows it's important, but he is all caught up in the "she wont ever remember" thing. Frankly, I told him I should get a gift since I did all the work last year haha. I'm just so proud of my little one and so thankful that after everything we went through she has come out of it a strong, healthy little girl.
If I want to fill the house with rubber ducks because of that, so be it :P
the menu sounds amazing! i don't have kids yet, but I can only imagine how exciting planning a 1st birthday party can be - I would probably just go all out and know I wouldn't need to something crazy again until they were much older...
and i know you posted about the duck cake in another post recently...still can't wait to see pics of that
YUM. Very impressive.
We had a birthday party for the boys (my nephew & Owen) at my parents', so my mom made the food, hehehe. All I had to do was bake/ice some cupcakes. And drink wine.
FYI, you can get a buttload of rubber ducks for cheap from the Oriental Trading Company.
This is where we're at... celebrating a year of parenthood with friends and family!! I did get some decorations from 1st wishes (thanks for the suggestion, Jess) with cupcake themes to match his cupcake and make the house look nice. He also LOVES balloons, so I got some of those to play with/ decorate. Very bittersweet, and even though he may not remember it, there will be pictures he can look back at :-).
