Sending CV to old boss--cover letter needed?

My old boss contacted me about an open position at his company (our dept was let go 3 years ago).  I'm going to be forwarding my CV to him, we've talked about the position, but I don't have a job description yet.  He will be passing me along to HR in a small company (and he's the hiring manager).  Should I include a cover letter?

Re: Sending CV to old boss--cover letter needed?

  • I have a fairly casual relationship with past bosses so I'd probably send an email the "great talking to you, excited to work with you again, here is my resume" type.  I don't feel like the cover letter is necessary since the intro isn't necessary.
  • Do a cover letter.  It's certainly not going to hurt you, and will show that you are always professional and not taking anything for granted.  It doesn't have to be long, but when it doubt, err on the side of professionalism.

I second jennifer-if he's indeed the hiring manager, you should be set with a solid email.  The only time I might have a different opinion is if it were a publicly listed job, because then you could draft a cover letter to fit the PD.  But this sounds like a pretty standard reference hire, and I wonder if the job is even on the streets.
