Re: Best Book Rec...

  • I'm reading a book called 'Beyond the Western Sun' and really enjoying it.  I can lend it to you (Kindle to Kindle) if you're interested.

  • I really liked Love in the Time of Cholera (don't watch the movie though, it's terrible!)
  • I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez!

I read Chocolat this week, which is just lovely. I've seen the movie several times and love it too, but the book is just great.

Have you read any David Mitchell? Cloud Atlas is one of my favourites of his, but Ghost Written is quite good too.

Ooh, or if you like classic lit (like Jane Austen) but want a twist, Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series is a quirky fantasy/sci fi twist to the world of literature.

Uhm... also, the latest two teen lit series that I've read over the last two weeks were both pretty interesting:

Incarceron (Catherine Fischer) - distopian/utopian worlds plus a self aware universe. Kinda crazy, but a lot of fun

Chaos Walking series (Patrick Ness) - the first book is so-so, the second is good, and I think the third one is AMAZING. It's one of those series that's really worth slogging through the first one. They also have that distopian setting, but really just a great series about war and why people fight and the strength it takes to refuse to fight.

  • I second Kaesha's rec for the Thursday Next series. Also, his Shades of Grey from last year was excellent.

My favorite book so far this year is Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Absolutely wonderful story that's complex and well-written and evokes small town life.

If you're into short stories, Lauren Groff's Delicate Edible Birds was quite a read that's full of emotional ups and downs. Ron Rash's Burning Bright was my favorite collection from last year.

Lavinia by Ursula K. Le Guin is a great read if you're into fantasy/mythology. It's basically a female take on The Aeneid.

I must read this! The Aeneid is my get-angry-at-jerkish-men book.

  • I just read The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins and loved it. the last book left a lot to be desired, but the first two were great. definitely YA, but an interesting story overall.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. movie is coming out next month!

I also just read the Emily Giffin series (Something Borrowed, etc), but it's not a new novel so I'm sure you've probably already read it.
