Can I re-use soil from last year?

Hi ladies.  I have a couple hanging baskets from last summer that have had the flowers die off except for the ivy.  I was lazy and never removed the dead stuff over the winter, but I was wondering if I could still use the soil that is inside the baskets for flowers this year?  Does it make a difference?

Re: Can I re-use soil from last year?

  • AFter you remove the root ball from the plants that were in it last year you'll have ~50% of the soil left, so you'll need to add some new anyway.

A lot of the soil's nutrients will have been used up by last year's plants, so you'll need to fertilize more to get good growth.

And if there was any type of disease on any plant that was in that soil last year, throw it out.  Don't compost it, throw it out.

  • Cool.  Thanks for the info!
