Nesters who have relocated to NC. Any tips?

DH and I would love to relocate to NC from CT.  Its the whole finding a job thing that is tough (I know, I know the economy.)

I'm a SAHM, DH is a finance guy, with an MBA, has worked in a big pharmaceutical for the past 5 years. Everyone says NC would be a great place for us, but landing that job is seems impossible.  Any tips for the local market?  Headhunters?  Companies that are hiring in health sciences/pharma?

Any info would so very appreciated.

Re: Nesters who have relocated to NC. Any tips?

  • I work in Pharma as well in the Triangle area and unfortunately there have been tons and tons of layoffs and cutbacks in our area in the last two years. Would you consider Atlanta? There are a handful of smaller pharmas there that haven't been hit as hard and probably just more job opportunities in general. Due to the economy, there is not a big difference in the cost of living there vs. NC anymore. GL! I hope you are able to find jobs wherever you decide to go!
  • Thanks for the insight.  We are facing the cutbacks up here too.  DH's company is laying off thousands and while he's safe for right now it feels a little like the writing is on the wall.  We probably will hang tight and see how we weather all of this, but we're definitely putting our ear to the ground for other opportunities.

Atlanta would be a hard sell to DH.  We'd love to move somewhere warmer (after just having a grueling winter) but Atlanta would be a bit too far to the other end of the spectrum.

  • We moved from Philadelphia a year and a half ago. We moved solely because of DH's job. He was offered a relocation to Charlotte so here we are. We thought it would be a nice change. It has been a change and we are enjoying it for sure. As far as jobs I think it is tough in all markets in every city. There have been so many layoffs and cutbacks that now that places are starting to hire there is so much competion. I think things are getting better but I certainly wouldnt risk moving without a job offer in hand for atleast one of you. That is just me. I wish you luck!
  • I would try to find the job first before picking up and moving here. Good luck!

  • We are also in the process of relocating to NC due to DH's job. When he found out his job was not stable, he immediately started looking for something in either Charlotte or the RTP. He ended up finding a job in Charlotte in just a few weeks and moved down there in January. I, however, am having a really hard time finding something.

I would recommend looking on indeed.com for jobs. If you think you are going to have to move soon, I'd start de-junking to get rid of or sell whatever is not worth moving.

  • Oh we definitely won't be going anywhere until we have a job. I think in times like these that would be incredibly risky, if not dumb to pick up and move.  Right now I'm just trying to find ways to find that job other than the obvious internet searches.
