Re: & DH Wonders...

  • Holy crap! It's always eerie to see them like that. DH and I were just talking about getting kayaks and going out on the intercoastal too. lol

  • We have 2 kayaks, but we haven't been out together yet. I really really do not like being out there by myself, so I rarely used our first kayak.

  • Hells no!  That is why I don't go in the ocean.  Love to be at the ocean but not in it.

  • One word: MORON!

"basking sharks aren't usually dangerous or agressive toward humans" <----that's all I needed to hear.

Oh, and I agree with cake. The "typically" aren't dangerous to humans line was enough for me.

I would do this with a basking shark.  I want to see one so bad.  There have been sightings out around our coast at least once a year.  There's a time of year where all the male Whale Sharks (close relative to the basking shark, but bigger) migrate to Belize and just hang out.  I've been diving in Belize and its the most beautiful place to dive, it would be amazing to see the sharks there at the same time.

"How big is the Ocean Voyager exhibit, and what will I see? (top)

The exhibit contains 6.3 million gallons of water and ranges in depth from 20 to 33 feet deep. This exhibit houses thousands of fish including whale sharks, zebra sharks, sawfish, leopard whiprays, bowmouth guitarfish, humphead wrasses and schools of tarpon, pompano and cownose rays. That?s just to name a few."

  • I'm with Laner on this one.. they eat plankton. It's not like they're going to mistake you for plankton (which is what happens in shark attacks, when surfers look like fish from below etc).

Im literally LOLing at this and jen's they arent going to mistake you for plankton.

Seriously though, this is the ONLY risky thing I do.  Im usually a chicken ***.  I dont even go to scary movies and honestly, one of my biggest fears is sharks.  I dream about them and start to freak out when I think about them in the water, BUT once Im in the water Im fine.  Its like a totally different world and the initial fear in the boat disappears.

Ditto. I choked on my coffee.

I know nothing about basking sharks, but I HAVE thought it would be really cool to be close to a whale shark. I wouldn't just jump off my kayak to see what happens, but I would dive with some in a group setting. Nestie outing???

I'm the same way - I won't get in the water at the beach, but I'll dive in the ocean. It's a totally different world when you're out there. DH and I have talked about doing one of the shark feed dives, I think it would be fun :)

I'm in....especially if you happen to know where a whale shark will be ahead of time. ;)

I did a night dive in Maui once where visibility was only about 6-8 feet in the direction my hand-held light was shining only.  The scariest part wasn't when a shark got into that line of vision...it was when it left it. heh

That is awesome.  I used to freak out all the time when I would see barracuda, then my dad pointed out that its the one that you cant see that are the scariest.

In all the years I've been snorkeling/diving I've never seen a shark.  Two summers ago was the first time I even saw one at the beach even though I've practically lived on the water since I was born.  I was so excited, like a tourist. lol

Ok, that's a little eerie. lol I might have to work up to that sometime. I will venture into tropical waters as far as you can go, but I'm not a huge fan of deep dark water. We went snorkeling off the coast of Catalina several years ago and it was kind of creepy when you immediately dropped into 30-40 feet of dark cold water. (No dragging coastline like FL.) You couldn't see very far infront of you, but you could see the bubbles from the divers coming up from the kelp forest far below. It was neat once I stopped jumping everytime the kelp touched my leg.

  • LB, When I was little we would swim at UWF's pool a lot.  I dont remember exactly how deep it is, but its deep enough for a high board.  I took swimming lessons there and I was always so freaked out to swim in the deep end because I was afraid Jaws was going to get me.  In the pool.

I dont do dark water, unless Im really really into it.  We have a man made fishing reef at some coordinate off Pensacola beach.  We think Ivan moved it, but there's no way it moved too far since it was so heavy, so my dad wants to drop in at the coordinate its supposed to be at and then swim around together with the boat following us until we find it.  I said no way.  It's only about 20-30 feet deep there, but you cant see the bottom and it freaks me out.

OTOH, I went 90 feet deep in Belize that year and didn't even know it until my dive comp told me.  It was crystal clear.  30 feet on the gulf coast and 30 feet in the Caribbean are NOT the same.
