How to get stray kitties out of your yard?

Since our house was empty for a while before it sold, I think it became homeless kitty central. I don't mind some kitties (and even thought it was cute when we'd see this scrappy ol' tomcat I call Tom staying dry on our deck when it rained all day Saturday). The cat fights are mildly annoying, but happening less.

But tonight took the cake. Tom was curled up on one of our new patio chairs. And he left some blood behind?! I'm thinking we at least need to do a trap and release because Tom's got quite the set. But what else? How can we keep them from hanging out in our yard? I don't really want to take them to the pound (and I'm not sure all are strays) and last time I checked all the no-kill shelters here were full (and Tom's too feral anyway).

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I'll send my dogs over. They love to chase cats=) They'll chase those cats right out of your yard.

Can I have them next?  We've got so many cats that hang in our yard (and defecate in my vegetable garden) and there are awful cat fights at night...often with chunks of fur left over.  I think part of our problem is that we're almost the only house without a dog...so they get chased out of all the other yards into ours.

an easy way to deal is get a dog.  once there's a dog the cats will steer clear more.  the best way to deal with the stray/feral cats is to trap/neuter/release and then let them stay.  if you relocate them other cats will move in because the territory is unoccupied.

  • You probably know this already but don't feed them. I would contact local cat rescues or humane society and ask how to complete a TNR successfully.

  • Our problem is that they're not stray, they're outdoor cats (at least the most frequent visitor is)

there is a motion sensor controlled sprinkler you can get too...search online.  I wasn't able to find it at Lowes

  • - motion senser sprinkler

    - water gun to use whenever you're at home and see the stray kitties

    - use or sprinkle things with texture or odor that cats hate: some black peppers, citrus fruit peels, vinegar (be careful as vinegar will kill plants), or pine cones (they don't like to walk on those).

I've never tried those ideas, though. I just read them online.

    GL!
