Hawaiian Entertainment - Solo Style? Tips needed!

Hi all, I should probably post this on the travel boards but I really want the opinion of people that live there!

Here is my situation - My fiance and I will be heading to Oahu in June for our honeymoon. We have timed this perfectly with a hospital rotation he has to do there for a few weeks. We will be at the Hale Koa (he's military) in Waikiki for the first week and doing all the fun honeymoon/touristy stuff. However, when he starts his rotation, we will stay in the quarters the military is putting him up in. So basically, I get a free place to stay for two weeks - so I'm staying!

However, he is going to be super busy while on rotation. I think we will have most evenings and weekends together but essentially during the day I am going to be on my own. So I was wondering - what are your recommendations for me to go explore all by myself? I'm sure I'll enjoy a couple days lounging and reading on the beach, but I also want to definitely take advantage of the island and take it in.

So what are some things you enjoy going to or doing all by yourself on the island? I will have a rental car so feel free to suggest anything. I have to figure out how to entertain myself for two weeks!

I really appreciate and suggestions!

Re: Hawaiian Entertainment - Solo Style? Tips needed!

  • Here are the places that I usually take guests to when they come to visit and I wouldn't mind doing any of these things by myself.

The USS Arizona- you can also tour the USS Bowfin and USS Missouri

Drive up to the North Shore-Haliewa has lots of little shops, Lanikea Beach-to see turtles, Sharks Cove-snorkeling, Waimea Valley-really pretty gardens and a waterfall that you can swim under, Waimea Bay-watch surfers, Dole Pineapple Plantation

    Haunama Bay-snorkeling

    Hike Diamond Head

    Byodo In Temple

    Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium

Bishop Museum, Sea Life Park Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu Zoo, Polynesian Cultural Center

Make sure you bring your military ID because you will be able to get discounts on most things and you will also be able to go back to the pool at the Hale Koa or use the pools and beaches on the military bases.  I usually feel safer going to the beach by myself on a base, such as Hickam, Kaneohe, Bellows or to go to very touristy places like Waikiki or Ko'Olina.  Hope this helps
