New McCain ad that doesn't mention McCain

I'm in PA and just saw a somewhat strange ad sponsored by neverfindout.org.  It consists simply of a man with a pained expression talking to the camera, asking how we know we can trust Obama.  He then describes Obama's ties to Ayers and asks how we can elect as President someone with "such close documented ties to a terrorist."

Has anyone else seen this ad?  It was just sort of strange because the overall feel of the ad was one of pleading.  The man's tone of voice and facial expressions were fearful and the commercial was quite stark.

Perhaps more interesting was that McCain wasn't mentioned at all.  I've started receiving Republican mail over the past few days that doesn't mention McCain either.  It simply talks about sending Republicans to Washington.  As I said yesterday, it looks as though Repubs (in PA, at least) have taken David Frum's advice.

Re: New McCain ad that doesn't mention McCain

  • I think those are ads by PACs or even the RNC. I have seen ads on both sides that don't mention the candidate but are anti the other candidate.
  • I think 527s have weird rules about when they can and can't advertise for a candidate.  I think they are unlimited in their negative campaigning, but limited in their positive campaigning.  I don't totally understand it, but I'm fairly sure that is how the law works.

That makes sense.  I'm not familiar with the law re: 527s at all.  I've filed that away in my brain in the tax/estate/other-really-boring-areas-of-the-law category.
