Does anyone here make cakes?

DH is having a 29th(again) bday party for me in early April and I'm hoping to get a cake somewhere. I could make one, but it'd be a 13x9 frosted in the pan. ;) Let me know if you bake/decorate, of if you have a great recommendation around town. Thanks!

Re: Does anyone here make cakes?

  • I could make you a Princess cake with a Barbie doll sticking out the top. Stick out tongue I make these for my nieces every year for their birthdays!

How many people and what kind of cake were you thinking?

LOL! I'll keep you in mind for DS's bday; he calls himself Tinkerbell... :z

  • I'll be interested to see the suggestions for local bakeries that make good cakes. The one I love from my youth is Arnie's.  We had their Dutch Chocolate Torte for H's baptism and was yummy.  Their Buttercream frosting is really good.  They are old school Westside to me! Love them!

This time of year always makes me want Hummingbird cake, though.  It is a banana and pineapple layer cake with cream cheese frosting and it is so good. There is a little cinnamon in it too, if I remember correctly. I decorate it with pesticide free edible flowers (pansies.) Not that anyone ever eats the flowers, but they make the cake so pretty.

I've never heard of hummingbird cake--sounds interesting!

  • Is KUBES still around? I know she probably could.

My Cousin-in-law is a school for Pastry and has been making cakes. They are really really good.

I can recommend Cupcakes by Design. I used them last year for SS's Bday.

They're beautiful! I had no idea they did cupcakes there.

  • I decorate cakes for friends & word of mouth customers.  They're done in my kitchen & I can do regular or gluten free (different pans).  The only catch is that I live 45 minutes outside of GR.

I love that you can do GF free of cross-contamination. :) DH just said he asked two friends to bring desserts, but I might need a cake for his bday the following week... and that would be GF!

  • Costco cakes are delicious, and reasonable priced.

Sweet Cake Designs makes very pretty cakes.  I've been checking out Stiletto Sweets on FB.  I've never tasted one of their cakes though.

Cute stuff! Thanks for the link.

  • Whenever I can, I actually bake the gluten-full cakes at my mom's house so I don't even get the gluten in my kitchen.  I still have different sets of pans though, stored in different places, for when I do have to switch back & forth in my own space.  I don't love the deep-clean of the whole kitchen afterwards if I have to do them here though!!  But I want people to be safe (and me too).
