for June. Apparently he is eager to make his mark in the world.
Wednesday the 16th my water broke. I could have sworn up and down it was incontinence because it wasn't a gush of water and I only leaked fluid when I got up from a sitting position. At one point I ran to the bathroom and saw pink when I wiped and knew that this was not good at all. I called my doctor immediately and got an appointment as soon as possible. I was praying for a bladder infection, but my doctor confirmed that my water broke and I was admitted to L&D. I was 28 weeks and 5 days. I really wanted to blame myself for pre-term labor, but my doctor said it's just crappy luck.
The first 48 hours were critical for baby and me. I was given 2 steriod shots to help the development of the baby's lungs, magnesium sulfate to stop the contractions, and antibiotics to ward off any infection. I was bleeding clots and the doctors assumed it could be from either the cervix or placenta abruption. We were given an ultrasound to check the fluid level and the baby. The AFI (amniotic fluid index) was at 11cm (normal is 30) and the baby weighed about 3lbs. We also passed on being team green at this point because medically speaking, preemie girls do better than preemie boys (it's called the wimpy white boy syndrome). It's a boy!
I made it a full week and and half with my water breaking. My fluid levels varied each day on the low side, but the baby wasn't showing signs of distress and I wasn't showing signs of infection. The doctor told me to keep up the boring and my body was doing just that. Every morning the doc did an ultra sound to watch the baby's heart, practice breathing, eye movement, and fluid levels. I was pleased as punch when we made it to the one week mark because the doctor said I could very well go another week. Our first goal was 30 and then 32, but ultimately 34 would have been ideal for this situation...hell 37 was ideal.
Now, it wasn't unusual for my body to have contractions or any kind or tightening of the tummy. It wasn't consistent, until Saturday March 26th. The morning non-stress test(NST) was perfect, but just after lunch when I started my second NST I also started feeling some contractions. They were fairly regular, but I was just about to get a dose of my contraction meds, so I was certain they'd go away with some fluids and laying on my left side. Nope. I was having them every 7 minutes and then 5. The nurse put me back on the IV for fluids and continued to monitor me. When they were just about 3 minutes apart she got the doctor on the phone again and told him to come check me. He explained that with every contraction the hear trate of the baby dips pretty drastically. Now, if I were to be 7-8 cm he thought the baby would be fine for a vaginal delivery, but would be worried if I were only 5cm or less because the baby could not handle it. I was 1cm with the worst contractions, he made the call and we were in the OR for a c-section faster than I could blink. Serioulsy, it went from being just H, doc, and the nurse to 12 other medical professionals in the room with me.
Our baby boy was born at 6:40 pm on March 26th when I was just 30 weeks. He weighed in at 3lbs 3oz, and is 16in in length. Oh, he's totally not that wimpy white boy. He fought off every medical instrument that came his way on the warming table and then he peed. Also, when they were settling him into the NICU he about pulled off every monitor thingy on him.
I got to hold him today; I can't get over how small he is. He gave me the stink eye, but then he opened both eyes. Oh, he also has the face/palm action down pat. I love him so!
