By any rare chance, does anyone on the board have scoliosis and chronic back pain as a result? I'm looking for some relief for DH. He had surgery as a child and will need surgery again at some point in his adult life. However, we aren't ready for that and we just saw a scoliosis doctor on Friday that agrees. But, he has been in a lot of pain lately. Pain meds are not an option. Physical/Massage therapy did not do much. He has an appointment to see another doctor in May to see about get some type of shot that may help. Any other advice/thoughts? Thanks!

Re: Scoliosis
I know dedication to physical therapy that has helped others. It's about strengthening the right muscles to subside the pain. I would also encourage pilates for core strength and stretching.
I have scoliosis but it has been manageable and my pain is minimal and only occasionally. I do have a dance background which I think has helped tremendously.
good luck. I would use surgery as the final, last resort, used every other option choice. I know your DH has gone through a lot and back surgery isn't something to take lightly!

Thanks. He has gone through physical therapy twice- once in 2000 and once from January to now several times a week and it hasn't done anything. It helped the pain for the day but by the next day it hurt again and going to PT every single day just isn't feasible. But, he does have severe scoliosis.
He had surgery when he was a freshman in high school because his spine was about to puncture his lung. So he has a rod and a series of hooks and screws in his back from his neck down to L2 but L3, 4, and 5 (or something like that) are not fused and are curving/curved and that is where his back hurts. So if he had surgery, it would be to fuse him down there. THAT would not be fun.

MnMShaw,
I'm a big time lurker but your post really spoke to me. Sorry about DHs pain. I had a similar surgery to your husbands for scoliosis and am waiting as long as possible for the next one where I will get fused father down as well. I tried the shots and to be honest that whole experience was so painful it was not worth the few weeks of pain relief (at least for me). What helps with my pain the most is getting frequent massage weekly (can't really afford that but if could I would do it more). If I know it's my muscles are out of whack I'll use my TENS unit. Does he have one of those? If not, he should get one. Insurance should cover it if prescribed.
Pain meds just suck so I don't blame him for not taking them. I try to avoid those things at all costs but sometimes you just have to give in for quality of life purposes. Also, swimming during the summers helps me a ton. If he hasn't checked out this website, he should. It has a bunch of other people with similar issues talking about ways to cope without surgery or sometimes with. http://www.scoliosis.org/forum/index.php
Good luck!
