Start, Whitmer, or something else?
We just moved to Toledo and are looking for a home, but we were interested in looking into what the local school districts have to offer to help make the decision easier. We don't have any children yet so school is a ways off, but I like to plan ahead. I've been looking into Whitmer a lot since there seems to be a little more information on it than the others, but Start also seems to offer a lot of athletics and activities which are very important to us. I would obviously like the school to have good academic standing, but I would also love a school with a lot of athletic options and good ranking. Can anyone shed a little more light on to the topic for me?
Re: Start, Whitmer, or something else?
I would look more into the surrounding suburb schools/cities... Maumee, Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg all have great schools. There are some good schools in Sylvania and Holland. All are within 10-15 minutes of Toledo proper.
I've lived in Toledo my whole life and I plan to stay around here. However, I've always planned to move to Anthony Wayne, Perrysburg or Maumee once kids come along.
I would also look into the suburbs, Sylvania, Perrysburg, Anthony Wayne, Ottawa Hills, Maumee, they always have consistent, excellent ratings at all the schools and as entire districts.
Toledo Schools are iffy, as a whole, they are not a very well rated district. Individual schools may have decent ratings though, but for the most part they are are poorly rated as most inner city schools are.
If I had to pick only between Toledo and Washington Local, I'd go with Washington Local.
I am, and always have been, a HUGE proponent of the Toledo Public Schools, but with the way things are going -- failed levies, cuts in state funding, poor leadership etc. -- even I'd recommend you check out suburban districts at this point.
There are some really great schools in TPS, but there's pretty much no guarantee that any activities or athletics will even stick around after all of these cuts. Plus, it just seems like the district as a whole is a mess right now. It's really sad.
Because I was positive we answered this for you before I went and found it. Here you go again:

You can use this link to search schools and see their performance not only as the district as a whole, but you can also search individual schools as well.
Personally, I do not send my children to TPS, and will not as long as I can afford to send them to private schools. This is based on my own experiences and research. TPS as a district in general is failing to thrive, in my eyes.
Strange! Thanks! I can see it in FF, but not in IE.
