PSA: Credit Report

You can check your credit at annualcreditreport.com for free once a year using each of the three credit reporting agencies (transunion, equifax, experian) - so essentially 3x a year if you were to use each agency at a different time. You can see a detailed report but it does not include the score. I used transunion and actually saw an old dental bill I didn't even know existed!! So I got that taken care of...but through transunion there was a link to zendough.com - a monitoring website that allows you to actually see your score when you sign up for a 7-day (maybe 14, i forget) trial offer. I signed up, saw my score, and then cancelled immediately without any hassle. I was never charged. Just wanted to let everyone know in case you were interested in checking your credit!

Re: PSA: Credit Report

  • H and I have done this many times - just REMEMBER to cancel the service haha, and they will try every trick in the book to try to get you to keep the service. One time I seriously heard H say "No thank you, I want to cancel at this time" about 15 times.

BUT, it is a great service:)

  • Having worked in loans (refinancing) and in the financial industry, I HIGHLY recomend you viewing your credit report atleast once a year.

I suggest 3x ( for ex: April= Equifax,  August= TransUnion  December= Experian) This will help you a lot when applying for loans so you know what is on it and getting old things cleared up (as in OP). I don't agree with checking your score each time or even once a year (maybe once every 3 to 5 years) but ensuring your credit report is accurate is VERY important, even when applying for jobs (which I know most of you have)

Ok, I have a question; Luis and I check our report once a year (so far, we'll be more prudent about these things now that we have other people depending on us.)

We saw some things on Luis' report that are incorrect - things that his father put one there (For example, a bill to the Shand's ER when Luis was already living in Tampa; the only difference in Luis and his father's names is the Sr./Jr. aspect.) As in, Sr. knew Jr.'s SSN and used it when he was getting billed for the medical care, I guess.  Or something.  I'm not sure how that goes on.  ANYWAYS...I emailed to update the information and challenge the bill and all I got was an email that said, "Thanks for updating your address, make sure to pay that bill now, you hear?"  Does anyone know what He/We are supposed to do now...?

I would call the company that is incorrectly reporting the information. All Srs medical records would be in Jrs name as well (which is even scarier). Generally when it is something of this sort the companies are willing to work with you. They know people can be shady sometimes and some parents in "times of need" would stoop to do this. Generally the billing department would be able to update this information.

If the company isn't willing to resolve it I would call the reporting bureau, they will help you sort out the situation.

Lol - that's what I figured would happen but the guy I talked to cancelled me immediately. He was trying to sell me but it was so weak, I actually feel bad for him because I am sure his job won't last long. I'm such a sucker I almost wanted to call back and cancel with someone else!
