Leaving the baby for the first time

so, my grandmother just passed away and I have to fly to Canada.  The baby is not feeling well so he probably shouldn't fly and DH can't come with me, so the baby is staying home.  I will be gone until Friday and I am really dreading being away from him for so long.  He is going through a mommy only stage so I hope that he is ok with DH and MIL while I am gone.

Has anyone left their less than one year old for a longer period of time?  I know some of the working mommies have gone on business trips.  How did you "get over it"?

  • i have no advice either, but wanted to offer my condolences.

is your baby in daycare, and used to separation somewhat?

just trust that your baby is being taken care of by loving people who are doing their best!

it's not easy to be apart, whether it's for a few days or just one really long day. there were a handful of times that i left before Ava was awake and came home after she was asleep. Hasn't happened yet with Sam.

  • No help here but very sorry your grandma passed.
sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.
  • No advice for you here either. I haven't left A for longer than a day since she was born, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry about your Grandma. (((hugs)))

  • I'm so sorry for your loss E.

The first time we left A for more than a night out was for a weekend away to attend a friends wedding, and that was when he was 14 months old.  I luckily didn't have any business trips until he was about 2.

To manage being away from him we called home often to check up on him.  But we knew he was in capable hands with my MIL so we didn't worry.  One thing I've read is to sleep with one of their stuffed animals in your bed for the week before you leave so that it has your scent on it (I know, sounds like what you do for a dog right. LOL). Then you give it to your LO to sleep with while you're gone and it's suppose to give him/her comfort at night.  I've never tried it so no clue if it actually works.

Do you have a laptop with a camera on it?  You can skype while you're gone so you can see him and that may help you also.

One other thing, don't be surprised if you come back and DS has flip flopped to have a little bit of daddy-itis from being home with him.  That happened to me when I went away for a trip once and I wasn't expecting it.

  • First let me offer my condolences ((HUGS)). I left A over night. Honestly he was really fine. I just think I worried myself more then anything. I'm sure E will do great with your dh and mil. Leave lots of notes and call to check in, everyone will do great!!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss...

I don't have any advice but, since he'll be with your DH and MIL, I'm sure he'll adjust and be okay.

  • Thank you so much for all of your condolences.  It has been such a whirlwind trying to book a ticket on short notice that it just hit me this morning that I have to leave E.  I am not concerned about him missing me as much as me missing him!!

Jennynel-Thank you so much for all of your advice.  I wish I had time to do the sleep with a stuffed animal thing, but in the Jewish faith, we bury very quickly because we do not embalm.  She passed yesterday and the funeral is tomorrow.   I am taking my laptop to skype.  I just hope he doesn't freak when we turn it off.

Again, thank you so much.  I know I have been really MIA and it is nice to know that I still have such a strong support group with all of you.

  • Sorry for you loss.

My mom had a hard time going to Istanbul Turkey 2 weeks ago because she would miss Jack.  She bought him a buildabear with her voice singing Wheels on the Bus (Their song) and a book she recorded.  I sent her daily text pictures for the week.  She took of the Monday she got back for Jack time.

I had planned to go away this summer but it has been pushed back next summer for a 9 day cruise without DH or the babies.  I will use Jenn's tips.  They will be with DH, my mom and MIL while I am away with my dad.
