TMJ

Which doctor would you go to for TMJ- dentist or general practioner?

When I was in high school my pediatrician told me I had TMJ and that was likely what was causing migranes.  I put it off and then started getting migranes as an adult.  My wisdom teeth were impacted so I chalked it up to that and have recently had those taken out.  Fast forward to now, I have been waking up in the mornings with a migrane.  Not only that, when I go to open my mouth wide, my jaw clicks and it continues to do that through out the day.  Whenever that happens, I get a head ache.  So, which doctor would you go to?  Or, if you have any advice or suggestions to keep me out of the doctors, that would be great too. TIA!

Re: TMJ

  • I think you have to go to an orthodontist. You might be clenching your jaw at night or grinding your teeth. An orthodontist can make a mouth guard for you, but I'm not sure if dentists can do that. I wear a mouth guard and it helps a lot. I feel like I may have seen generic mouth guards at Target and the like (in the dental area), but I can't tell you anything about those. HTH!

  • I've seen those mouth guards at the store before.  Do you know if the mouth guards help with my jaw clicking when I stretch my mouth open or just with clenching my teeth at night.  Because I know I am clenching my teeth at night but the jaw clicking is a new thing and doesn't feel so great. I'm wondering if that is happening because I am clenching my teeth at night.

  • Go see your GP. I went last year because I started having a lot of headaches. I was also noticing that I would "catch" myself clenching my jaw during the day. My doctor said the grinding my teeth at night and clenching my jaw were could lead TMJ. She recommended 2 aleeve in the morning and 2 at night to help with the jaw inflammation(pain). She also recommended a mouth guard too. She told me to try the ones from the store before going to the dentist. The ones from the dentists can be hundreds of dollars and my Dr had heard good things about the self molding store bought ones. The store bought one has been great.  She also prescribed a mild muscle relaxer at night. The combination of the mouth guard and muscle relaxer are essential for me. If I skip the relaxers or don't wear my mouth guard for a couple nights, the headaches come back.

I would go see a GP soon. I've heard TMJ can get very painful if not taken care of.

  • DH has tmj and has done nothing.  when he yawns his jaw has a HORRIBLE sound.  It sends chills up my spine.

A few years ago he yawned and it got stuck open.  I have hilarious pictures of him in the ER with it stuck open.  The ER drs had to pull his jaw and 'relocate' it back into place.  They told him to go to a dentist/orthodontist asap for a night guard.  He hasn't done anything about it, and I refuse to play "mom" and make him go.

I would head to an ortho as soon as possible because apparently once your jaw gets stuck - it's significantly more likely for it to happen over and over.

  • I got this one from my Ortho; it works great.  He said it's like a cushion you put in there to train your jaw to stay open a little.  I used it for a few months then didn't need it anymore.

I would give your dentist a call and ask them who you should see.

  • Just to answer your question, the clicking is the result of your jaw bones wearing down the cartilage in the mandibular joint. It can be very painful and cause a lot of headaches and inflammation. I've suffered from this my entire life and the orthodontist was the only person who could help me. GL!

  • I have it too and ground my teeth down before I found a dentist that diagnosed me and gave me a mouth guard. I still have some clicking when I open wide though and have been told there isn't really anything I can do about it. Confused
