Hello everyone. I have been in my current position for almost 3 years and am very much looking to find a new job in the next few months. In my current position I'm underpaid and have no chance for advancement or even any guarantee of stability (I work for a state government that is talking about making job cuts to fix their budget). I also am not learning anything and though I like my boss and co-workers, I feel like it's time to move on.
However, we are in a very busy time right now at work. There is a kind of unspoken rule that we can't even use any sick days during this time period, much less vacation or personal days. I kind of got stink eye for a dentist's appointment I have tomorrow. But this period ends at the end of May. Ideally, I'd love to be able to leave right after the busy time period ends, so I don't screw my boss over too much.
How long do you think it takes, in your experience, from application to starting a new job? Is it appropriate to start applying to new jobs now, when I have 2 months left in this busy time? I don't want to wait until the summer and then find that there are no jobs available (I work in a small, highly competitive field, and opportunities are few and far between). I am pretty desperate to find something new, but I really don't want to burn any bridges or end this job on a sour note. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you!
Re: Time frame for getting a new job?
It really varies by field, region, etc.
I don't see how you're going to be able to interview between now and May if you're already getting grief for a dentist appt.

Depends on a lot of factors: the field you are in, the demand for that field and the economy.
It wouldn't hurt to start looking, however, just to see what's out there.
yes, it may take several months or over a year to find a new job. it totally depends on what is out there, and what you are looking for. good luck.
I think it really depends on what you're looking for and several other factors related to relocation and such. I just went back to work after my first baby and found a job in 2 days. (Something I'm very thankful for.)
