Federal Resume?

I am relocating to the Northern Virginia area soon, and am beginning to look for jobs.  Obviously, there are quite a few fed jobs open, however, I have never written a federal resume.  I have done some looking at templates, and basically, I am wondering if it is worth using a resume writing service for this?  Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How is a federal resume different than any other resume? :

Especially with USAJOBS, you're going to have to tailor it for each position to make the cert list anyway, because the first filter is a keyword search.  I definitely wouldn't consider it for a fed job.

  • From what I remember, I have never used a specific resume when applying for jobs (just my usual resume), though in the past you did have to apply through USAJOBS and answer KSA's: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities essays. You normally also have to include your transcripts from your schools, if the job requires a specific type of degree. I have also heard that they use keyword searches to select qualified candidates.

However, the last few federal job I have applied for haven't even required KSA's: you answer an occupational questionnaire on a separate website and then upload your documents. Though none of my applications have been successful, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask!

  • USAJOBS has a template that you can fill out and use for some openings, but not all jobs accept it. Fed resumes require a lot of information, but I don't think you need a resume writer. Follow the examples you see. Like pp have said most resumes are tailored to specific jobs and require the posting number, ss, and veteran's preference on them. Good luck. The hiring process usually takes forever and yes, there are a lot of job openings, but also a lot of qualified people here. Unfortunately, sometimes it's who you know rather than what you know.
