Abercrombie & Fitch

Maybe I'm just old but I don't understand the fascination with Abercrombie & Fitch.  They are just discussing on the radio that A&F have a bathing suit with padding.  No big deal right, but this is aimed at 7 year olds.  What 7 year old needs a padding bikini/ bathing suit top.

Any thoughts on Abercrombie?

  • They are just discussing on the radio that A&F have a bathing suit with padding.  No big deal right, but this is aimed at 7 year olds.

What?! This is ridiculous. The sex sells idea is constantly getting marketed to a younger and younger audience, I think it is disgusting. There is no way to turn back after they have already gone that far.

I also do not understand the fascination, that being said my teenager nieces and nephews are always wearing AE, A&F, or Hollister.

  • I have some things from A&F, some of it is decently high quality and worth it if you get it on sale.  I have to double-wash it all, though, because their store stinks.

I heard that story too.  While it disgusts me, this is nothing new.  I saw padded training bras in Wal-Mart when I was in college.  I think it's being way over-hyped.  For one thing, the Abercrombie store doesn't cater exclusively to 7 year olds; older girls shop there as well.  I'm not 100% certain what their target demographic is but definitely girls in the 13-14 y.o. age range shop there, and I know older girls who shop there too, because it's basically the same stuff as A&F but cheaper.  Also, it's a parent's job to tell their kids they can't buy clothes like that.  I understand that young girls will see the stuff in the store and want it, and it affects their body image and all that, but I really don't think this bathing suit is meant for the 7 year-old crowd, but their older customers.  Just tell your daughter, "No, sweetie, that's for older girls" and move on.  I don't think a girl that age should be wearing a triangle-top bikini at all, padded or not.

  • 1) all my life i have hated abercombie.  i hate walking by it in the mall.  i hate the smell of it.  i hate the loud music.  i hate their sexist and racist clothing.  their shitz tacky, made in sweat shops, made for bulemic stupid girls, etc.  no offense to anyone who likes their stuff, i just think that is who they are targeting it for.

    2) i saw those bathing suits.  i am just focusing my attention on other things that are bothering me more right now like japan, nuclear energy, libya, and gay marriage.  once those things get fixed i will start focusing more on the younger sexualization of children.

3)wow, i am  foul, mean biitch.  apologies, i dont mean to come off that way!

  • LOL Shauni I love you so hard.

  • Don't like them.  I bought a few things from there when I was younger, but have since realized the error of my ways and moved on from the store lol.  I haven't been in one in literally years, even though I pass by them all the time when at the mall, etc.  I just don't think much of their clothing is worth the price, and am not crazy about their styles anymore.  There are so many other stores selling prettier, nicer, classier, more reasonably priced clothes than them I have no idea how they are still in business.

I categorize Hollister the same way.

  • Hollister is owned by A&F, so it's basically the same clothes, but cheaper and cheaper quality.  Sort of like Gap vs Old Navy.

I only have essentials (plain tanks and tees, nothing with their logo all over it) and a few plain cashmere sweaters from there, all bought on clearance.  They are definitely not one of my favorite places to shop and I can't set foot in the store.

  • I've never even been in one of their stores. I can't help it, but every time I see/hear about the store I think of that old LFO song, Summer Girls.

But yeah, padded bikinis marketed at 7 year olds is just dumb. IMO a 7 year old shouldn't even have boobs, but considering some of them do, theres absolutely no reason to add padding to them.

  • I hate these stores and the image they try to sell. My little sister shops in them or used to and probably still would if she had the money. I hate. HATE. the smell of their stores. I get a headache every time I walk by them in the store.

I really hope the bikinis are meant to be marketed at more of the teeny bopper age (and parents are smart enough to say NO) and not to little 7 year old girls. But in the end, it falls on the parents to regulate what their children wear.

  • MFD hates that song but it makes me laugh.

I hate A&F and its little red headed step child, Hollister.

  • I heard this on the radio this morning too, but they were focusing the discussion more on 7 yo's being allowed to wear bikinis rather than on the padding issue.  My 10 yo niece wears bikinis.  No, not little string bikinis, but still stuff where her belly is exposed and I think she looks cute.  It's not sexualized in any way, shape or form.  Don't really see a problem with that part.  If pervs are gonna look, it ain't gonna matter if she's wearing a one-piece or an age-appropriate bikini.

The padding is a whole other issue.  They already grow up too fast - no need to rush it anymore.

I think there are age-appropriate bikinis for younger girls, I wore bikinis pretty much exclusively my whole life because I had a long torso growing up and it was very hard to find one-piece suits that fit me.  Triangle bikini tops are not ok.
